The former India captain suggested that the BCCI should step in with clear rules.
There has been a lot of talk about foreign players not being fully available for the IPL and people have different opinions on this issue. Now, legend Sunil Gavaskar has urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to penalise overseas players in IPL 2026 who do not fulfil their assigned roles during the tournament. Read on to know all about it.
Sunil Gavaskar Urges BCCI To Impose Penalties On Overseas Players Who Fail To Fulfil Their Roles
The former India captain shared his strong views in a recent column for Sportstar. He concentrated on all-rounders who, despite their ability to bat and bowl, only play as batters due to workload management.
Sunil Gavaskar argued that if these players can bowl during practice sessions without any problem, there is no reason they cannot bowl in actual games. He questioned why teams should accept less than full effort from expensive overseas stars. He believes that a player should step aside if they cannot perform the job they were selected for from the outset. This would let the franchise bring in someone else who can contribute fully.
He also dismissed the excuse that franchises were told about injuries or limitations beforehand. Sunil Gavaskar asked how much “before” really means. He believes such reasons are not good enough when teams invest huge amounts in these players.
The former India captain suggested that the BCCI should step in with clear rules. He proposed something like a two-year ban for players who are not ready from the first game, similar to the existing penalty for those who pull out after the auction. He stressed that franchises pour in crores of rupees and deserve complete commitment from every player they buy.
He also highlighted how overseas cricket boards benefit greatly from the IPL.
