Nowadays, it has become a sad trend that family members of cricketers often become targets of online trolls and abuse. Shresta Iyer, the sister of Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer, faced a lot of trolling recently. She had made a video after the match between Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders was washed out due to rain. Her video, meant to support her brother’s team, led to heavy criticism and hateful messages from many fans online. Read on to know!
Shresta Iyer chose to share her side of the story on Instagram on Monday. She said that her video was only light banter. She wanted to cheer for her brother in a fun way and there was no bad intention behind it. She respects all cricketers because her brother plays the game too. Yet, some people took the video too seriously and turned it into something negative.
In her post, Shresta Iyer described how the trolling had gone too far. Unknown people started calling her workplace and using bad words. They also abused her colleagues and students. Her family members received disturbing calls at odd times. Even the students she trains got unwanted hateful messages. She felt bad that one video caused so much trouble for everyone around her.
She said it is normal for her to celebrate when her brother wins. In cricket, teams win some matches and lose others. That is part of the game. But attacking the families, sisters, and wives of players is wrong. Fans should enjoy the sport instead of spreading hate.
Shresta Iyer hoped her message would open people’s eyes. She wanted fans to see the pain caused by such online actions. While she will always stand by her brother, she believes attacks on families should stop. Actions always bring results, and everyone should choose kindness over anger.
