Indonesia Passes Law Criminalising Extra-Marital And Pre-Marital Sex. Wait, How Are They Planning To Track This?

Some bans and laws in a country raise many questions. Firstly what was the need and secondly, how will it be implemented? Well, certainly these were the first few points that struck us after we came across the law recently passed in Indonesia. The law bans and rather criminalises sex outside marriage, and well this law will be applied to citizens as well as foreigners.

Indonesian Parliament passed a new criminal code that no couple can have sex outside marriage. Or even having pre-marital sex will be punishable. As per the code, a partner or any family member can report the crime to the authorities and immediate actions shall be taken. Although this new law will not come into effect for the next three years. If anyone breaks the law, they will be subjected to a punishment of one year in prison.

In fact, as per the news of BBC, the new criminal code in Indonesia also has strict laws to punish anyone who speaks ill of the President or the ideologies that the country promotes. There were also reports of protests against this new criminal code. Human Rights groups believe that this code is an injustice to the LGBTQ+ community and also all minority groups. The code is also looked at as a way of suppressing citizens’ freedom of expression, and political opinions. Also, this new criminal code, for the very first time in the country will punish people who will manipulate anyone into becoming an atheist.
