Ozempic is one of the most talked about topics on social media. It was know for its weight-loss effects. And as per recent reports, Indian pharmaceutical companies will now be selling and producing Ozempic at a cheaper price. This happened after the patent held by the Danish company expired on March 20. What Happened?
A Danish pharmaceutical company, Novo Nordisk developed Ozempic in 2017, and they had a patent on an active ingredient in the injection called semaglutide. As per the reports, it ended on March 20. Now the Indian pharmaceuticals have actively started producing and selling Ozempic at a cheaper price. Some pharma companies rolled out a batch the very next day of the patent expiration. They are producing their own versions of the medicine.
The local pharma companies in India can now legally make their own versions using the same formula and they are called generics. As per the reports, the pharmaceutical company Dr Reddy’s will also roll out its version Obeda and it is priced at 4,200, while another version by Zydus has been priced at 2,200 per month. For the unversed, the Ozempic price in the USA is around $200 to $220 and more.
This medicine was initially prescribed for diabetic treatment but later started to be known for its weight-loss effect. As per the reports, the reduced prices will increase the accessibility of the medicine among the masses. Which also means the demand for it will increase too.
