The nation is currently celebrating India’s win against New Zealand in the ICC T20 World Cup, and we can’t keep calm! The team piled on 255/5 in 20 overs in Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on March 8, Sunday, making it the highest score in a T20 World Cup Final. From Jasprit Bumrah’s stellar bowling to Axar Patel taking the wicket, here’s some details about the historic win.
India Wins Against New Zealand
India did not have to pay much for the dropped catch of Finn Allen, with Axar Patel sending the destructive New Zealand opener back in his very first over. It was not the start India would have wanted after Shivam Dube put down Allen earlier. The same Allen, remember, who blasted a record century against South Africa the other night in Kolkata. Suryakumar Yadav quickly walked up to Dube and asked him to keep his chin up. India and Arshdeep Singh could easily have had a wicket in the opening over, but no need to fret now.
India humiliated New Zealand’s bowling attack, with Ishan Kishan hitting a 23-ball fifty and forming a century partnership with Sanju Samson. More crucially, India has reached 200 with five overs remaining.

With this win, Suryakumar Yadav joined Rohit Sharma, Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni as the Indian captain to win a World Cup. Earlier, India rode on Sanju Samson’s 89, Ishan Kishan’s 54 and Abhishek Sharma (52) to post an imposing 255/5 in 20 overs.
The win also helped India break the New Zealand curse in the T20 Word Cups. Before today, India and New Zealand have played three matches in T20 World Cups in 2007, 2016 and 2021, with the Men in Blue losing on all three occasions.
