Priyanka Gandhi Calls Female Wrestlers “Country’s Pride”, Demands Probe Into Their #MeToo Allegations

The sexual harassment allegations by Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat against the coaches and President of the Wrestling Federation of India have shocked the nation. The wrestler is currently protesting against it at Delhi’s Jantar Manter. Many powerful women in the country have shown support and asked for strict actions. The Congress leader, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also joined this list after she tweeted about the incident. The Congress General Secretary has asked for an immediate probe into this matter.
On January 19, Thursday, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took to her Twitter handle to condemn the sexual harassment faced by the women wrestlers of the country. She called them the “Pride of the nation” who have represented the nation on a global scale and have won innumerable medals for us. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed disgust about the fact that such women have to go through this kind of harassment in their own country. She demanded a probe into the accused in the case, WFI’s President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

On the same day, the Delhi Commission For Women chief, Swati Maliwal also issued notices to the sports ministry and police in this matter. They demanded an FIR in the case and sought necessary information on the allegations made against the WFI president and coaches. In the latest update on the news, the Union Sports Ministry had asked for a formal response from WFI within 72 hours, as per the news. Vinesh Phogat is protesting at the Jantar Mantar along with 30 other wrestlers. Alleging the WFI President of sexual harassment and abusive behaviour, they have asked for his termination from the office. Sister Babita Phogat who is also a BJP leader also attended this protest and extended her help to give these wrestlers the justice that they deserve and ask for.
