Who Are Naga Sadhvis, And What Do They Do?

Similar to Naga Sadhus, Naga Sadhvis go through an initiation process that can take years. They must practice meditation and give up material things for six to twelve years. During this time, they often live in isolated places. During this procedure, they cut off all ties and perform a ritual called ‘Pind Daan’ and embark on a new spiritual journey. Another interesting thing about Naga Sadhvis is that they break gender stereotypes by taking on roles that are usually done by men. They also fight for equality and also represent female empowerment. With honour and respect, Naga Sadhvis are called ‘Mata.’

These women play a key role in preserving Hindu traditions by passing down sacred knowledge through word of mouth. They are often spotted in their simple saffron robes and a mark on their forehead with long hair.
