What Is Paschimbanga Chhatra Samaj?
Paschimbanga Chhatra Samaj is an unregistered student body and the Nabanna Abhijan rally is being organised by Sayan Lahiri of Rabindra Mukta University, Subhankar Halder from Kalyani University and Prabir Das from Rabindra Bharati University. The student group claims to be non-political. According to the group’s spokesperson, Sayan Lahiri, the Nabanna Abhijan rally is organised by a non-political platform unaffiliated with BJP, RSS, or ABVP. Sayan Lahiri also criticised the government on the way they are handling the Kolkata doctor’s rape and murder case and called the chief minister incompetent.
The student body is holding the rally with the members of the Sangrami Joutha Mancha advocating for their Dearness Allowance (DA) to be in line with the Central government employees. Furthermore, the students have only three demands: justice for the victim, the culprit to face capital punishment, and the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. According to the spokesperson Sayan Lahiri, they intend to peacefully voice their demands. If they are stopped, they will try to reach the secretariat gate peacefully to demand the chief minister’s resignation for failing to prevent incidents like the RG Kar Medical College case.
