“They Refused To Come Downstairs”: Activist Reveals Mumbai Registrar Office Lacks Disability Access
This is shocking!

It’s very easy for all of us to just climb up 2 floors but that’s not the case for differently abled people. And sadly our country does not have enough facilities to make life smoother for disabled people. Model, actor, motivational speaker and disability activist Virali Modi took to Twitter to share how she had to face troubles on her special day due to the lack of facilities. The activist revealed that she went to get married at the Registrar’s Office in Khar, Mumbai on October 16 but the office was on the 2nd floor with no access for disabled people.
PLEASE RT!
I am disabled and I got married at the Registrars Office at Khar Mumbai on 16/10/23. The office was on the 2nd floor WITHOUT a lift. They wouldn’t come downstairs for the signatures and I had to be carried up two flights of stairs to get married. pic.twitter.com/ZNCQF3gJRY

In a shocking X (formerly Twitter) thread, Virali Modi shared that when she went to the Registrar’s Office they refused to come downstairs to get her signature and she had to be carried up 2 floors to get married and what’s worse was that the stairs were steep and railing was loose and rusty and no one offered any help to her. She went on to reveal that her agent who was handling her marriage registration paperwork was aware of her disability.
How is this fair? What happened to the Accessible India campaign? Just because I’m a wheelchair user, do I not have the right to get married to someone I love? What if someone had slipped and what if I had fallen on my wedding day? Who is responsible?

The disability activist questioned the Accessible India campaign and went on to ask if she did not have the right to get married to the person she loves. She questioned who would be held responsible if someone had slipped or if she had fallen. Expressing her disappointment, she highlighted that she’s disheartened that her country’s government as well as citizens are unable to accommodate her disability. Sharing that her faith in humanity has been destroyed by the incident.
My country should accommodate to my needs and the needs of millions of disabled citizens. This is extremely unfair, unprecedented, and unexpected. My rights matter! This was a government building and the people in charge of running this country should lead from the front.

Sharing her anger, Virali Modi rightly pointed out that she is not luggage which has to be carried up and that she’s a human and her rights also matter. She further added that her country must accommodate her needs and those of other disabled citizens. Highlighting that this was a government building and the leader of our country must take charge.
The Man Behind Ft. Virali and Kshitij
In a conversation with Hauterrfly on The Man Behind, Virali Modi revealed all about finding love in her partner Kshitij. The disability activist shared that she met Kshitij on a dating app after facing several challenges. She shared that she had her walls up to protect herself from heartbreak due to her paralysis but Kshitji’s love helped her open up and embrace love without fearing a heartbreak. And now, the couple tied the knot at the Marriage Registrar’s office in Mumbai on October 16.
