After Rashmika Mandanna, Sara Tendulkar’s Viral Deepfake Videos, IT Minister Lays Down New Rules On AI Manipulation

Deepfakes have become a serious cause of concern amongst people in the internet world. With celebrities like Rashmika Mandanna, Kajol and now Sara Tendulkar, being the most recent targets, Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship of India Rajeev Chandrasekhar has declared new laws and rules against deepfakes. In order to prevent such instances in the future, the Union Minister alongside the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) has carved a mechanism for the same and is going to hold the culprits accountable. Here’s all that you need to know about the laws against deepfakes.

- According to the latest update, Rajeev Chandrasekhar has appointed a team to develop a website, where users across social media and networking sites can flag their concerns and speak against the violation.
- Going forward, Meity will help users locate such threats notify them about violations of IT rules and assist them in filing a First Information Report or FIR.
- FIR will also be lodged against the person or a third party, from where the content has originated.
- Moreover, the committee set for this purpose asked all social media platforms to go through the new guidelines and have been given a time frame of seven days to regulate work according to the IT rules.
- The Centre has also declared that both the creation and circulation of deepfakes a punishable offences, and anybody who carries it will be charged a strong penalty of INR 1 lakh in fine and three years in jail.
- The section has also ordered social networking sites to remove or clear up any such content with any such content within 36 hours of such reporting and ensure action.

Previously, the government had also urged social media websites to take strict action against the same and remove all deepfakes from their websites. Mr Chadrasekhar also declared that there will be zero tolerance against content created by deepfakes. Well, we hope for stricter actions on the same, hoping people won’t misuse the power of social media.
