“Why Presume Women Are Bad At Tech?” CJI DY Chandrachud On Plea To Exempt Female Lawyers From E-Filing
Why, exactly why?

Women are not good drivers and women cannot manage finances are some very common presumptions about our gender. CJI DY Chandrachud spoke against another such presumption recently during a hearing of a plea in the Supreme Court. He questioned the lawyer for assuming that women are bad at technology. The plea was filed by the Madhya Pradesh High Court Bar Association on the new law of mandatory e-filing in debt recoveries.

The three-judge bench of CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice PS Narsimha and Justice JB Pardiwala recently heard a plea on the amended rule 3 in the e–filing of the Debt Recovery Tribunal and Debt Appellate Tribunal Electronic Filing Rules. The lawyer who presented the case to the judges specifically pointed out that women lawyers and senior citizens should be made exceptions in this rule. The advocate of the petitioner added that for justified reasons women and senior citizens should be given exemption from the mandatory e-filing rule.

To this argument, CJI DY Chandrachud firmly questioned the lawyer on presuming that women were not efficient at handling tech. As per the news, the CJI also slammed the counsel for questioning a woman’s competency by asking for their exclusion from the aforementioned rule. DY Chandrachud further stated that women lawyers are much more capable of handling technology than their male counterparts.

CJI DY Chandrachud has always been very firm in his statements and judgements against the patriarchal nature of society. On many occasions, he has assured the female lawyers of giving them a professional space that is equal and does not entertain any kind of sexism.

Even with this response, he made sure to give out a message that it’s high to stop cornering women by making senseless assumptions about them. Women being bad at tech is one such very common belief, and the CJI slamming this kind of perspective during a court hearing is a huge deal.
