Many rituals only demand sacrifices from women. Of course, in a patriarchal structure, such things are not usually questioned, but times have changed. Now, women have become vocal and curious, too. An institution like marriage is the prime example of how women are expected to submit to the ideologies of patriarchy. A video of a woman questioning why she has to take permission to come to her house after marriage is going viral. It has sparked many thought-provoking conversations around it.
The Bride’s Video
The video features a bride and a groom doing their wedding rituals. The pandit ji is seen explaining the vows when the bride quickly, with tears in her eyes, asks, “Ab ghar jaane ke liye bhi puchna padega?” (Will I have to take permission to even visit my house?) Music plays in the background, and therefore, the conversation is not clearly audible.
The video was shared by an Instagram user “heyitsnishthaa”, and the user also penned a long note in the caption. She disagreed with the common belief that a husband’s home becomes a woman’s home after marriage. She further talks about the home where a woman grows up, finds her identity, makes memories and finds utmost comfort. The user wrote that the house would always be hers no matter what. While she further spoke about building a new home and space after marriage, she refused to accept the belief that her parents’ house would no longer be hers after marriage. The note further spoke about how a woman can visit her home anytime after marraige and no permission is required to do that. She also wrote about her husband’s silent support during the emotional moment that was captured in the video.
