Ashok Kharat’s Arrest
Ashok Kharat was arrested in Nashik on March 18 for allegedly raping a young woman over several months. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been assigned to probe the matter.
Resignation Of Chaiperson
A picture of Ashok Kharat with the chairperson of Maharashtra State Commission for Women also surfaced on social media. Rupali Chakankara issued a statement dismissing any knowledge about Kharat’s personal life, but following the backlash, she resigned from her position.
More Cases Followed
Ashok Kharat was earlier a Merchant Navy Officer, and then became an astrologer. More cases of s*xual harassment and cheating FIRs were lodged against Kharat.
Investigation
The SIT also requested an extention on his judicial custody. And as per the last court hearing, this was extended till April 15. The SIT has launched a full-fledged probe into Kharat’s financial dealings and mobile data. They have been questioning Ashok Kharat and are digging in his network too. The police also revealed that Kharat exploited many women under the pretext of helping them. He also made the vegetarians eat fish after claiming that it would heal mental health issues, as per news reports.

Video Leaks
It was reported that many Ashok Kharat videos were leaked online, and the authorities removed them from over 170 adult sites. This also led to more survivors facing harassment and opting for work-from-home. A recent TV9 Marathi report suggested that survivors also sought psychiatrists’ help to deal with depression. The cyber police is working to prevent videos from leaking.
