The disturbing case of the self-proclaimed godman, Ashok Kharat, has been making headlines for the past month. For the unversed, he has been booked under several cases of s*xual harassment and extortion by the Nashik Police. He is also under investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and will face a probe by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Read to know about the same here.

Apart from investigating the antecedents of Ashok Kharat’s assets, the ED has also taken necessary actions, as Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who is also the state’s Home Minister. “We have identified all of Kharat’s bank accounts and the transactions that occurred through them,” he said. The Chief Minister’s declaration comes as Kharat’s name has also been linked to alleged hawala transactions. Referring to call detail records revealed by social activist Anjali Damania, which allegedly showed 17 calls between Ashok Kharat and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and 117 calls with NCP leader Rupali Chakankar, the Chief Minister said the leak would be investigated. He stressed that only authorised agencies are permitted to access such data and added that the state government would probe how the records were accessed and who was responsible, warning of strict action.

Speaking about the SIT probe, he said more individuals are coming forward with information related to Kharat, and around 12 cases have been registered so far. He added that the SIT is receiving multiple inputs and will continue its investigation until the entire matter is thoroughly uncovered. He also assured that strict action would be taken in cases involving misconduct or atrocities against women.
