Allahabad HC Says Live-In Relationships Make It Difficult For Woman To Live Alone After Break Up

Live-in relationships have been demonised in India for a very long time. They have become the benchmark for all the things that could go wrong in a relationship. Whenever there’s news of a live-in relationship going wrong, the nature of this relationship is blamed instead of the person who was on the wrong side. Especially, after the Shraddha Walkar murder case, the older generation has been advising the younger ones to not opt for live-in relationships. A statement made by an Allahabad High Court judge, in a case of a false promise of marriage, has surprised us. The judge said that breakups in live-in relationships make it difficult for a woman to live alone later.

As per reports, Justice Siddhartha was giving verdict on a case where the man and the woman were living in for one-and-a-half years. The woman got pregnant during this time, and her partner did not want to marry her. The judge said that a woman coming out of an unsuccessful live-in relationship finds it difficult to live alone. He also said that these relationships are not acceptable in Indian society.

The Allahabad judge also added that in such cases when live-in goes wrong, the woman has no other option but to file a complaint against the partner. The woman in this case was married to another man before the live-in relationship and had two kids with him. The woman alleged that her live-in partner sent her obscene pictures to her husband, who refused to live with her again.

The accused man’s lawyers said that the woman is not a minor and had entered this relationship willingly. They also said that no promises of marriage were made when the relationship began. Finding logic on the accused’s side, the HC has granted bail to him.

Blaming the relationship for the wrongdoing of a man does not sound right. Men take advantage of women because of such grey areas in these matters and the woman is left helpless.
