Air India’s San Francisco-Mumbai Flight Suffers Technical Issue, Passengers Deplaned In Kolkata

In addition to the ongoing aviation hazards and unfortunate incidents in India, another Air India flight was halted and deplaned in Kolkata. This time, the flight was travelling from San Francisco to Mumbai via Kolkata. It was in the West Bengal capital where the flight encountered technical difficulties during its scheduled stop early on Tuesday, 17 June. Find out what exactly happened here.

What Happened With The Air India Mumbai-San Francisco Flight

The Air India flight that was halted was AI180, a Boeing 777- 200LR flight. It landed in Kolkata at 12:45 am, and during its scheduled stop in the city, it was detected that there was a technical snag in the aeroplane’s left engine, which was going to delay its takeoff. By early morning, around 5:20 am, all travelling passengers in the flight were asked to deplane via an announcement from the airline.

The captain informed the passengers that this step was being taken in the interest of their flight safety. Pictures released from Kolkata airport show the aeroplan grounded on the tarmac while its faulty engine was being inspected by the authorities concerned.

Similarly, another Air India aircraft, the Air India Dreamliner (AI315) flying from Hong Kong to Delhi, returned mid-way while in the air due to a possible technical issue. This was the same aeroplane model as the one which was involved in the deadly Ahmedabad crash near the city of Ahmedabad, which claimed the lives of over 270 passengers.

A British Airways flight (BA35) going to Chennai was also forced to return to London after a similar technical difficulty. The aircraft was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, and it remained in the air for nearly a period of two hours before it eventually turned back.

Response From The Authorities

Following the Ahmedabad plane crash tragedy and other technical faults in other aircraft, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered the airline, Air India, to carry out additional checks and maintenance on all its Boeing aircraft. A safety directive mandate was issued, which calls for a set of checks like fuel parameter monitoring, diagnostics of critical systems, inspection of the cabin air compressor and related components, electronic engine control testing, and a review of take-off thrust and performance metrics.
