As much as I love being alive in the era of technology, there is no denying that it comes with threats of its own. But through these pressing times, there is one cyber threat, in particular, that is hanging over our heads like a double-edged sword. It’s the same one that our parents are all too familiar with- fake news and misleading information. Ever since coronavirus showed up at the scene, Whatsapp messages have been off the hook with some seriously weird tips and tricks on how you can beat corona. We have all heard (and had a good laugh on) all the epic ones- drink cow urine to cure corona and chant some mantra 100 (exaggerating) times and corona will never be able to touch you. But some news pieces are floating around out there that sound way more plausible and can easily confuse the reader. These come in the form of forwarded messages and videos masquerading as facts with no actual base and no verification and they lead to more serious damage than you can imagine. Which is why I am so glad that TikTok India has taken up the initiative to spread awareness against the spread of fake news. As part of the #MatKarForward campaign, it released a video directed by Anurag Basu featuring Virat Kohli, Sara Ali Khan, Kriti Sanon and Ayushmann Khurana. Now, when you watch the video it may seem like they got together for this discussion but rest assured, this video was shot in their respective houses and then compiled. Basically, in the video, they are talking about all those things that could go wrong because of all this fake news. They also warn people against believing any message or video that does not have a link from the government since it could be potentially harmful if you forward those messages. Virat, who shared this video captioned it, “All of you support us with such fervour when we play for the nation. But now the nation needs you, me, all of us to play for it. Will you do your bit?” I love how the underlying message of this caption is that we all need to fight this battle together. Anyway, the point is that no matter how much time you spend on WhatsApp right now, it isn’t a place to get your news from. Gossip? Maybe. But please just stick to news channels and their websites for facts. This video is a must-watch to everyone (maybe you can pass around of WhatsApp).
