World Kindness Day: 6 Tips That Will Help You Be Kinder To Yourself

World Kindness Day: 6 Tips That Will Help You Be Kinder To Yourself

Kindness is a word we have been taught in regard to someone else. Being kind to others is something that all of us have been taught. But what about all the times we are harsh on ourselves? When we don’t give ourselves the benefit of the doubt? Isn’t that unfair to us? I believe that being kind to ourselves is just as important as being kind to others. Showing tenderness to ourselves matters just as much, if not more. So on this World Kindness Day, I want to give you tips that will help you be kinder to yourself. And yeah, these tips have worked for me!

1. Forgive Yourself

We are the harshest judges of ourselves and as a result, are so hard on ourselves. While we find it simple to forgive our friends and family, we find it more difficult to accept that forgiveness ourselves. We overthink everything we do and are harsh on ourselves about them. Try to treat yourself the same way you would treat others.

2. Move Your Body

When we’re depressed, our body holds onto all of that bottled-up energy and emotion. To sustain our physical, emotional, and mental wellness, we must release that energy. Make sure that the physical activity you choose feels good and that you are enjoying yourself.

3. Stop Pressuring Yourself With Perfection

No one is perfect and neither are you. If you are one to go easy on others for their mistakes, be sure you are the same towards yourself. Treat your mistakes as a learning experience and move on from them. Being harsh on yourself because of that will cause more negativity within you.

4. Romance Yourself

Small actions like purchasing flowers for yourself are stepping stones towards developing new and positive habits. Together, they produce a new perspective that is joyful, happy, peaceful, and content. Take it a step further and arrange a date for yourself! You might be shocked by how much you like being by yourself.

5. Practice Self Care

Pamper yourself the way you would pamper a partner. Draw baths, cook yourself a delicious meal, do your skincare and haircare. Whatever makes you happy! Do things that make you feel better about yourself and make you feel take care of.

6. Give yourself credit where it is due

Many of our accomplishments go uncelebrated because we are too busy with life. Instead, we hold out for others to congratulate or acknowledge our achievements. Consider anything you want to be known for. It can be the smallest of things. But celebrate something you achieved, even if it was a mundane chore you were putting off. But have fun celebrating your achievements, the biggest ones and the smallest too!

I have been in therapy for a few months now and what I have realised is how hard it is to humanise myself. While I tend to give others a lot of leeways and the benefit of the doubt, I find it hard to do the same for myself. I fixate on a lot of my own flaws and mistakes and give myself a hard time about it. But these are behaviours that I am learning to break out of. It is a slow process but I am getting better. And on this World Kindness Day, I hope these tips help you do the same.
