If you ask your female friends whether they watch porn, most of them will be quick to dismiss the whole concept of getting aroused by it. You ask them if they masturbate and they will say no. And then you’re left wondering if you are the only one with a really active libido. Because a) you’ve watched porn and b) you’ve enjoyed it. Heck, you’ve been aroused by it and have gotten orgasms. Yet there seems to be a whole universe of women who claim to have never been on any porn sites. You tell your friend to stop being stupid and maybe she will tell you that she does indulge in it “once in a blue moon”. Now this whole behaviour pattern comes from the fact that we always assume watching porn is such a guy thing to do.

When a guy hits puberty, his friends won’t even ask if he watches porn. It is just assumed that he does. And it is treated as something normal. Women on the other hand, are supposed to be “good girls”. Which is why, even though we are all adults now, we seem to be so awkward in admitting that we indulge in watching it and actually enjoy it. There is that one little thing about it entirely being made to serve the male gaze though. You rarely find erotica, in written form or on video, that is meant to seduce a woman and what turns her on. According to research conducted by scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen, Germany, a person’s gender has little to do with their response to sexual visual stimuli. The scientists analysed the brain images of 1,850 people who were subjected to erotic visual stimuli. In the study which was published in the scientific journal PNAS, the researchers concluded that human brains react to sexual stimuli in the same way irrespective of the gender.

So, whether you are a man or woman, watching porn turns you on.
