Are more women dating younger men? From Priyanka Chopra Jonas to Katrina Kaif, we see a flip in the relationship dynamics of yesteryear. Gone are the days when women would consider just relationships with older men or those of the same age. Although not new, this trend is finding increasing acceptance as more female celebrities reveal their younger partners, and we’re all here for it!
Why Do Women Want To Date Younger Men?
We don’t know about you, but the dating pool for our age group is dismal. All the good men are taken, emotionally unavailable, or gay. The rest are uninterested in long-term prospects, and honestly, we are tired of doing the dating dance when it doesn’t last. Instead of maturity and older men, many choose the opposite.
Dating men of the same age or older comes with its own baggage and expectations. Society dictates that men are expected to provide, while women must take on a more submissive role. Power dynamic skewing in age-gap romances allows greater equality between partners. As Tracee Ellis Ross explains, younger men carry less toxic misogyny, and this leads to stronger relationships.
Women are more satisfied, on average, compared to their counterparts with older or same-aged partners. Apart from s*xual gratification, women are happier with a more balanced hierarchy in relationships. Who knew?
On Screen: Older Women Win, Relationships Thrive
Whether it is Sid and Aisha from Wake Up Sid or Solène and Hayes from The Idea of You, we have seen many mature women with youthful men on screen. In fact, Korea even has a term for this specific depiction: noona romance, based on the Korean word for older women that men are close to.
Well-known Korean actresses Song Hye-kyo (with Park Bo-gum in Encounter) and Son Ye-jin (with Jung Hae-in in Something in the Rain) have played the ‘noona‘ in K-dramas, both in 2018. Reckoning with power dynamics and societal pressures, love finds a way out in the two series.
At the end of the day, age is just a number. Women who find dating younger men to be physically and emotionally fulfilling shouldn’t care about what society has to say about the same. We hope to see more positive representations of older women dating younger men in the media, so women know it’s okay to pursue what they want, even if it is a younger man.
