What Is Val-Core Dating? All You Need To Know About This New Dating Trend That Is Dominating 2024!
Say goodbye to opposites attract!

Time and again, Bollywood has been the torch bearer of the opposites attract theory. In I Hate Luv Stories, a commitment-phobic man ends up in love with a hopelessly romantic woman whereas in Jab We Met, Geet who is bubbly and extroverted is set to change the comparatively introverted and serious Aditya. But have you ever wondered, if each of these characters shared a similar perspective on life and relationships as their partner then what would have happened? Shared values can have some perks when it comes to love and romance. So, let’s dive in and understand all about the new dating trend of val-core dating, also known as value-based dating.
Personally, I’ve had the most amazing dates and conversations with matches who had the same values as me like empathy and creativity. Our conversations were easy and respectful, even though it may or may not have worked in the long run. While reflecting on my dating life, I started noticing a pattern and there it was! I am more likely to be attracted to people who share my fundamental values, more commonly known as Val-Core dating or value-based dating. Val-core dating is a concept where the more common views and values you share with someone, the more likely you are to be attracted to them. Our values and worldview are inextricably linked to the social and political causes we support. Not agreeing on these essentials can often turn into a dealbreaker in the long run. It’s not like you can have kids with someone who hates kids, right?
In fact, Bumble agrees with me. According to a survey conducted by the dating app, 33% of the women stated that they find it off-putting if their potential partner is unaware of current social issues, while 25% find it critical for their partner to be actively involved in social causes. And do you really want to settle for someone you’re put off by?

Why Should You Share Common Values?
A very common example of value-based dating is green dating. As the name suggests, it refers to people who are looking to date a person who is eco-conscious and shares the same opinion on climate change as them. This preference for matching environmental values underscores the critical role that shared beliefs play in forming a strong relational foundation. Although, compromise might be a huge part of a relationship, compromising on fundamental values might lead to no relationship at all. Here are some reasons why it can help you build a healthy long-term relationship:
1. Conflict Resolution: On days when your partner and you don’t see eye to eye, the values act as anchors. This makes it easier to navigate through the problem towards a healthy solution.
2. Shared Vision: From sharing your ideas of the world to aligning your goals, values can provide a glimpse towards the future. One of you may believe that the best way to live your life is to travel the world, and actively support social causes, while the other person may choose to have a white-collar job with a set schedule (YJHD much?) without having to worry about the world. While both approaches are great, it may not be sustainable for both people to date considering their different values.
3. Encourages mutual respect: When you align with the beliefs of your partner, it is more likely that you respect each other. It is also easier to communicate with that person.

When it comes to val-core dating, it might not be the same for everyone. Similar to the tension between the nomadic zeal of Bunny and the structured stability of 9-5 life for Naina, a person might willingly set aside their backpacking plans to be there with their partner. Bunny and Naina are proof that the relationship dynamics of each couple are different. Val-core or value-based dating, however, helps us navigate dating and find a person we share our principles, values and vision, be it for a coffee or a lifetime.
