Episode 1 of Koffee With Karan Season 8 featuring Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone dropped on Disney+ Hotstar on October 26 and we just couldn’t wait to watch it. The power couple of Bollywood finally decided to appear on Karan Johar’s talk show together after nearly 11 years of dating and 5 years of marriage. In this episode, Karan Johar touched base with the couple about dealing with mental health problems like anxiety and depression. NGL, but in this episode of KWK 8, Ranveer gave us a lesson on how to date someone with anxiety and depression and we’re here taking notes.

Ranveer Singh Shares On How He Helped Deepika Padukone

Discussing mental illness, Ranveer Singh said that it took him a long time to understand mental health problems. He went on to share that the intent behind your words and actions as a partner matters. Ranveer said that if as a partner, one has the intention to protect, heal, support and to make their partner feel safe and help them navigate it and be there for them, one can navigate just about anything. Essentially, the actor meant that if your intention is to support your partner, you’ll find the right way to do it.

The Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani star recalled getting a call from Deepika Padukone when she first had a mental breakdown in 2014. He shared that he rushed home and instantly knew that something was wrong with her because while she was physically there with him but mentally, she wasn’t all there. He shared another incident from the past when the actress broke down at breakfast and couldn’t stop crying. Ranveer Singh revealed that he asked her what was wrong and when she didn’t know herself, he just rushed to her side and asked her what was wrong and what he could do to help while feeling helpless for not being able to deal with the situation.

The actor said that he began consulting with his parents and then eventually called Deepika’s parents for emotional support but the actress put up a brave front before them. The Fighter actress quickly added that she tried to act normal before them but broke down when her family was preparing to return to Bangalore after spending a few days with her in Mumbai and that’s when her mother knew that she needed professional help and sought it out immediately.

“He Was Extremely Patient”: Deepika Padukone On Ranveer Singh Being Her Rock In Battle Against Anxiety, Depression

In a conversation with Karan Johar about mental health on Koffee With Karan S8, Deepika Padukone revealed that her first brush with anxiety and depression was in 2014. The Fighter actress revealed that she has been on medications for nearly 10 years now and works on herself to maintain her mental health. Sharing how Ranveer Singh helped her through it all, Deepika said the actor understands mental illness a little better than he did earlier but irrespective, he made sure to create a safe space for her to be vulnerable, to be able to share and communicate. She also shared that throughout her journey, the actor remained extremely patient and that he was there and was understanding and continues to do so.

The B-town diva shared that sometimes one feels so many things during their battle with mental illness that it’s difficult to put them into words. Expressing her gratitude, Deepika Padukone shared that not once did Ranveer Singh tell her that “it’s okay” and to not be that way, not express her emotions or try to distract her when she was struggling. The actress said that he never tried to change the mood by playing music or asking her to go on a drive with him. Both DP and KJo agreed that any such behaviours would have been red flags because it’s the absolute worst when someone dismisses someone’s mental illness by saying “call a friend, it’ll be okay” or something along those lines.

Hailing Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone revealed that back then he didn’t know better and he has learnt how to be a caregiver over time. However, what he did to support her when he didn’t know spoke volumes about who he is as a person. She also highlighted how the actor always tries to create a safe space for people to be themselves.

Karan Johar Recalls Hold Deepika Padukone’s Hand During A Breakdown

During episode 1 of Koffee With Karan Season 8, Karan Johar recalled a time when Deepika Padukone spoke about anxiety and depression after he spotted her having a breakdown. The filmmaker shared that they were in a helicopter, flying to Alibaug to celebrate Shah Rukh Khan’s birthday, when he saw Deepika break down in a closed helicopter and she cried for 25 to 30 minutes as he held her hand. KJo went on to recall when he experienced anxiety at the NMACC launch and Varun Dhawan helped him through it.
