Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video Review: Triptii Dimri, Rajkummar Rao’s Infuriatingly Slow Film Treats Comedy As A Joke
hauterrfly Rating: 1.5 / 5

Some basic expectations of a promising light-hearted film are to get a few laughs and have a decent time at the movies. With similar hope, I stepped inside the theatres to watch Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri starrer Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video directed by Raaj Shaandilyaa. The supporting cast in this film includes brilliant actors like Vijay Raaz, Mallika Sherawat, Mast Ali, and Archana Puran Singh. Well, with a running time of 2 hours and 29 minutes approximately, Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video desperately tried to make its audience laugh by serving a painfully slow story that hardly stirred any kind of emotion in me. The stretched storytelling also hampers the impact of this film’s message in the climax. So clearly, the film does not serve its purpose, that being said, here’s a quick review for you to make a decision.

Plot

Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video is set in 1997 in the city of Rishikesh, Uttar Pradesh (there was no Uttarakhand back then). Vicky (Rajkummar Rao) is a popular Mehndi guy in his town and Vidya (Triptii Dimri) is a doctor who we don’t see practising even once. Anyway, the film kicks off by showing how Vicky successfully manages to break Vidya’s engagement and easily manipulates their family members into getting them married instead. Trust me, this process was made to look as easy as it sounds.

The story moves forward with Vicky and Vidya taking their honeymoon in Goa where they decide to record their first night because a lot of white people do the same (this is what Vicky tells Vidya). All’s well and good until one night, a thief enters their house and steals the CD player with their very special CD inside it. The family reports the matter to the police played by Vijay Raaz but he is instantly deviated from the investigation after meeting Vicky’s elder sister played by  Mallika Sherawat. On the other hand, Vicky initially refrains from breaking this news about the lost CD to Vidya after imagining the worst outcomes of this decision. He tries to find it himself but that only leads to more and more, and more confusion. The second half of Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala is mostly about how Vicky ends up in a huge crisis while looking for the CD with a parallel romantic plot between Vijay Raaz and Mallika Sherawat.

Film’s Too Stretched And Slow

Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri starrer Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video has an unnecessarily stretched plot with scenes dragged to a point that I wanted to get up from my seat and leave. The first half of the film takes its own sweet time to establish a plot about how Vicky Vidya’s Woh Wala video gets stolen, and if the story was not stretched enough, then there are two songs also to do the needful. Post-interval, there is also a sequence in a cemetery where a messy situation happens with all the characters in one and well, Stree makes a cameo here. I am yet to convince myself about the need for this sequence in the film. Moreover, it was not at all funny.

The climax of Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video deals with the issue of s*x tape rackets and how for a few pennies, some people risk the lives and respect of young couples, especially women. There’s also a monologue by Rajkummar Rao but all of this and nothing lands because by the time the film reaches its climax, I was too drained to feel any kind of strong or empathetic emotions for something which is very much a reality in today’s world. Ahh, it’s sad but true!

What Happened To The Jokes?

Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video tries to make you laugh in every scene and with every dialogue. That’s firstly not needed because it does not come naturally, and secondly, the watch becomes exhausting which is exactly what happened here. With humour like the 90s, which included body-shaming, umm mostly that and some situational comedy, the film hardly gets enough cackles as it would have expected. You can feel the actors taking inspiration from their previous characters and try do comedy which in the end looks stale and done and dusted! However, there are a few times when I found myself giggling, I so wish there was more of that at least.

Story With No Sense!

Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video was an attempt to highlight the need to address s*x video rackets in which the rich always exploit middle-class women and couples for money. However, to reach this climax, it tells a long and chaotic story that goes off-track, I don’t know how many times. With so many sub-plots like the stealing, investigation, Vicky-Vidya’s fallout over the video, Chanda Rani and the police officer’s love story, the cemetery sequence, more characters and finally the revelation of the big video racket, it’s only safe to say that Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video kept beating around the bush till the very end.

Performances

Rajkummar Rao has played the role of a small-town guy enough to know the exact recipe for doing it again with his eyes closed! I mean, there’s nothing new to see of him in this film. Rajkummar Rao’s performance in the film is a mix of Vicky from Stree and Pritam Vidrohi from Bareilly Ki Barfi. Also, kinda done with his OTT expressions to make us laugh! Even his serious monologue in the end looked dramatic with a serial-like background score to make it all worse.

Triptii Dimri played the part of Vidya well. In most parts, her character was overshadowed by the story or Vicky’s character (because the film mainly revolves around that). She looks comfortable in scenes where Vidya gets emotional or angry but certainly has some work to do with the comedy.

Unfortunately, even an actor like Vijay Raaz struggled to make us laugh with his acting. The writing and dialogues are to be blamed here. His character of a police officer who gives less importance to the investigation at hand (until the second half) and more time to chasing Mallika Sherawat’s Chanda Rani could become fun to watch but that certainly does not happen. While the actor makes his best efforts to do justice to the role, it only manages to get us laughing in a few scenes here and there.

It was good to see Mallika Sherawat back on the big screen but we would have liked a better script. The actor pulls off the role of an eye candy well, and her chemistry with Vijay Raaz looked fine too.

Verdict: Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video Has A Stretched Story That’s Not Funny!

Rajkummar Rao and Triptii Dimri starrer Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video takes comedy as a joke and treats it accordingly. The not-so-funny and stale jokes only make you cringe and laugh at its stupidity. Also, the lengthy and exhausting plot desperately needed some editing and better writing. The performances in the film are good but with the addition of so many sub-plots, one can easily despise the characters too. Also, itne gaane daalna zaroori hai kya and also I should add, the choreography of these songs was hideous. Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video hit the theatres on October 11, and it’s now on you to decide if you’re gonna watch it!
