Son Of Sardaar 2 tries to be funny but unfortunately fails spectacularly.

Son Of Sardaar 2 Review: Ajay Devgn, Mrunal Thakur Starrer Is A Bizarre Comedy Film That Will Test Your Patience
hauterrfly Rating: 1 / 5

Once upon a time, in an era long gone, a star-studded cast and high-budget films used to be a signal of an incoming hit. Big names, big budgets, and a few scenic Swiss meadows would guarantee you a good time at the theatre, but that’s not the case anymore. Also, with each new release, Bollywood’s idea of comedy comes closer to absurdity, and Son Of Sardaar 2 is no exception. From predictable, problematic jokes to lazy writing, this film will again make you ask the golden question: Did the original really need a sequel? Directed by Vijay Kumar Arora and starring Ajay Devgn and Mrunal Thakur in lead roles, read our review for Son Of Sardaar 2 here!

Plot Of Son Of Sardaar 2

Son Of Sardaar 2‘s plot follows Jassi (Ajay Devgn), who finally gets his long-awaited visa and heads to London to reunite with his wife, Dimple (Neeru Bajwa). However, he gets heartbroken upon learning that Dimple has moved on and wants to divorce Jassi. Dejected and worried about his property back in India, Jassi looks for a lawyer, only to accidentally run into Rabia (Mrunal Thakur), a Pakistani wedding dancer.

Following a comedy of errors, Jassi ends up playing pretend father to Rabia’s stepdaughter Saba (Roshni Walia), who’s set on marrying the son of the Raja (Ravikishan). To win over the intimidating in-laws, Jassi pretends to be a stern army colonel. Cue the chaotic wedding and over-the-top messy family drama.

Performances

Ajay Devgn As Jassi

Ajay Devgn’s performance as Jassi Randhawa leaves much to be desired. His portrayal of the bumbling yet lovable Jassi lacks the charm needed to make the character endearing. The character’s naive nature often comes off as plain foolishness, due to the actor’s flat delivery. The movie, at times, had emotional tone shifts where Devgn delivers heartfelt dialogues; however, the impact was not felt.

Mrunal Thakur As Rabia

Mrunal Thakur is gorgeous and charming in the film; unfortunately, that is all. Rabia’s character, portrayed by Mrunal, felt incredibly surface-level. It felt like there was not enough room in the script to see the actress’s real acting skills.

Supporting Cast

The supporting cast for Son Of Sardaar 2 was a notable one. From Ravi Kishan, Chunky Pandey to Sanjay Mishra, however, out of everybody, one particular name stood out, and that was Deepak Dobriyal as Gul. The actor’s comic timing and silly one-liners stole the show every time he was on the screen, and we would love to see more of him in the future!

Verdict: A Comedy Film That Suffers From Lazy Writing And Outdated Jokes

Sometimes, movies aren’t meant to make sense; you just sit back and enjoy the silliness. But Son Of Sardaar 2 crosses the line from silly to straight-up bizarre. The stunning backdrops of Scotland and London do little to elevate the experience, especially when many scenes are filled with distracting CGI. The soundtrack doesn’t help much either, with none of the songs standing out per se, except, perhaps, for ‘Pehla Tu Duja Tu,’ where Devgn romances Thakur in a graveyard full of spirits (and no, it doesn’t make sense, even with context).

Son Of Sardaar 2‘s script is all over the place with no clear story to tell, hanging on by one too many Russian and Brazilian girls jokes and Ajay Devgn’s one-limb-at-a-time choreography. But what truly tests your patience is the film’s not-so-subtle references to classics like Border and Gadar. This kind of nostalgia-bait has become a lazy plot device in Bollywood, thrown in purely to trigger audience reactions, and it’s a trend that really needs to stop.

The climax of the film will have your jaw on the floor and not in a good way. Absurd things keep happening one after the other. Bizarre and lazy, Son Of Sardaar 2 is yet another failed Bollywood attempt at reviving comedy films, rescued only by a few nicely timed joke deliveries.
