Rohit Shetty has mastered the art of making action-packed masala entertainers meant for the big screens, and his recent release Singham Again has been added to the list. Starring Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Arjun Kapoor, Tiger Shroff and Ranveer Singh, the film is very high on action, drama and some harmless comedy by the one and only Simmba. Adding a fresh perspective to the storyline, Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again has Ramayana as the parallel plot. But do all these elements blend well to give us a memorable watch? Let’s hear my thoughts!

Plot

Singham Again’s story is inspired by the Indian mythological epic Ramayana and we already had an idea about it through the four-minute forty-five-second long trailer. In this film, Singham’s (Ajay Devgn) only mission is to defeat Danger Lanka played by Arjun Kapoor. This enmity becomes stronger when he abducts Singham’s wife Avni (Kareena Kapoor) and for this mission, Singham seeks the help of his avengers aka The Shiva Squad. As the story unfolds, we are introduced to all the cops of the cop universe, starting with Lady Singham (Deepika Padukone), ACP Satya (Tiger Shroff), Simmba (Ranveer Singh) and finally Sooryavanshi (Akshay Kumar). The story of Ram and Sita is narrated simultaneously with some interesting trivia about the epic. Singham Again reimagines Ramayana in the context of the modern world, keeping the moral of this story same- Sacchai ki jeet yug ki mauhtaaj nahi hai (Truth always wins). Sounds catchy enough?

What’s Good?

Tbh, the film does not have major wow factors that will make you want to blow some whistles, it’s a much-expected Rohit Shetty film that only kept me hooked because of some elements despite knowing the film’s plot well in advance. Action sequences are at the top of this list. A very well-shot and directed action moment in this film is owned by Tiger Shroff. The actor pulls off this sequence with precision and he deserves all the praise. The climax also has an over-the-top action sequence with every member of the cop universe firing guns and fighting the goons.

The effort to incorporate the story of Ramayana was gripping. Dramatic? yes, but the epic was very cleverly used to portray the modern-age characters of Singham Again, fitting well into the overall cop universe that Rohit Shetyy has built. Also, the story is a good revision class on Ramayana, with some informative trivia on the places where different incidents of this epic took place.

Arjun Kapoor as the evil and scary Danger Lanka has done a fab job. I was hesitant about his character initially but it’s safe to say, that the actor has been impressive with his screen presence. The background score, direction and Arjun Kapoor’s look in the film turned out to be more powerful than the antagonist, which is surprising! His introduction scene was impactful!

Ranveer Singh’s Simmba gave us some memorable laughs with his perfect comic timing. TBH, I loved his one-liners in the film and some sequences where Ranveer mimics!

Rohit Shetty’s film also has a recall value that makes one sit in anticipation of who’s coming next. Watch out for Tiger Shroff’s Satya because he is the only one who comes unannounced. The second picks up pace and well only Simmba’s entertaining presence had me hooked.

What Doesn’t Work, Many Things!

To my surprise, Singham (Ajay Devgn) did not have many exceptional moments in the film this time. I could easily move on from his scenes because the thought of redundancy with his character’s presence was quite overpowering. The background score and the slow-motion camera movement no longer seem to be exciting enough, and this may be because it has reached an exhaustion point.

Well, hate to break it to you but Deepika Padukone’s Lady Singham hardly has anything major to add. Also, her role is exactly what we saw in the trailer. No surprises and nothing worth remembering. Also, the lazy writing of her character and dialogue was only irritating. Even if Singham Again was a glimpse of her character Shakti Shetty, it deserved to have some weightage.

Singham Again feels dramatic because of the background score and some unnecessary scenes. The film touches upon the relationship between parents and Genz kids through Singham, Avni and their son Shaurya. However, their scenes only end up becoming stereotypical, surface-level conversations that one wants to forget. Especially, Avni’s constant efforts to make Shaurya believe and get inspired from India’s rich history and epic Ramayana. Well, Singham and Home Minister (Ravi Kishan) randomly discuss situationships and benching before talking about their mission to catch the most-wanted criminal. Yeah, same thoughts!

As always logic is nowhere to be found in the film, especially in some action sequences and the writing. So I would not recommend using brains while watching the film and questioning why and what is happening in some moments. Deepika Padukone smoothly fighting the three best men of Danger Lanka without any resistance from the other end, only just to portray her fierceness as Lady Singham went overboard, it could have been toned down to look more believable. Akshay Kumar’s Sooryavanshi easily jumping off helicopters among other things is another OTT aspect in the film. The loud background score was bothersome.

The dialogues in Sigham Again deserved more attention. The Naya Bharat dialogue has been overdone now! It was another element that added too much drama to the film. Even most of Deepik’s swag-infused dialogues were too much to take!

Verdict: Good Action Scenes But That’s About It!

Rohit Shetty’s new film Singham Again is entertaining only in bits and pieces. There are some nicely choreographed action sequences in the film. Arjun Kapoor’s antagonist also fits well as the modern-day Raavan showcasing an intimidating personality throughout. Simmba’s situational comedy is bound to evoke some laughs, and well, the film gets better in the second half. Deepika Padukone’s Lady Singham deserved more and Ajay Devgn’s Singham is more or less blah this time. Dialogue writing needed some attention because the free-flowing conversation between characters lacked big time in the film. Also, nah did not enjoy Salman Khan’s cameo as Chulbul Pandey! Singham Again entertains but is also a forgettable watch. It’s running in theatres, have you booked your tickets?
