Sector 36 Review: Vikrant Massey, Deepak Dobriyal Deliver Excellent Performances In This Gripping But Slow Crime Drama

Honestly, I’m not a huge fan of watching crime thrillers that showcase brutal killing and murder scenes. However, recently I have been giving this genre a try, and NGL, I always end up with traumatising thoughts and scenarios. It’s like, I’m curious to see what happens next, but then BOOM! I’m hit with all those intense scenes! From blood shots to the creepy cutting sounds, it makes me want to shut my eyes but gets me engaged enough to know what happens next. Simply put, there’s something oddly captivating about the thrill and anticipation. Last evening, I watched Aditya Nimbalkar’s directorial, Sector 36, starring Vikrant Massey and Deepak Dobriyal in lead roles. It’s a fictional story based on real events and here’s a detailed review of it.

Plot Of Sector 36

According to reports, the film is loosely based on the 2006 Noida killings. In a slum called Sector 36, several children start going missing, which leads to massive chilling cases of murders, kidnapping and s*xual abuse. Vikrant Massey plays the character of Prem, who works for a renowned businessman Bassi, played by Akash Khurana in Delhi. He lives in a huge mansion, however, when the owner goes out of town, Prem starts kidnapping children from the nearby slum areas for months. Parents who have lost their children struggle to file reports at the police station run by sub-inspector Ram Charan Pandey, played by Deepak Dobriyal. As cliche as it gets, the police officer neglects the situation and doesn’t move forward with any kind of investigation.

However, things take a massive turn which shakes the sub-inspector, Ram Charan Pandey’s world. Due to this, he starts investigating about the missing children and uncovers skeletons in the drainage near the Bassi villa. This investigation leads him to Prem, a wicked and brutal serial killer. (And, I mean it) However, it doesn’t become easy, the case becomes more complex as powerful, rich people get involved and try to suppress the issue. As the story goes, Pandey realises, it’s not a simple case and has to deal with rich, powerful people. Will Ram Charan Pandey be able to catch the main suspect? Well, all we can say is that it’s a gripping crime-thriller as the police officer does whatever he can to arrest Prem and fight off the rich, powerful brats.

Performance

Vikrant Massey As Prem Singh: Well, Vikrant Massey absolutely killed it with the way he portrayed Prem Singh, a negative character. His expressions and the way he switched from an innocent worker to a brutal killer are mindblowing. He brought depth and intensity to the character which was very much needed for a psycho, wicked and dangerous character like Prem Singh. Moreover, Vikrant Massey’s ability to convey the complexities and darkness of the character is truly impressive. NGL, I hated his character from the bottom of my heart. He’s a prolific actor and he proved it again with this performance.

Deepak Dobriyal As Sub-Inspector Ram Charan Pandey: We are all aware of Deepak Dobriyal’s skills and he has done it again. I liked how the makers showed his character’s development in a not-so-shocking manner. He started as a relaxed officer, but as the story progressed, he transformed into a more serious and focused one.  There was this one scene where he had to react to a situation and suppress his emotions and he did it so naturally. A real and raw performance like this truly hit the viewers and you can expect the same from Deepak’s character.

Supporting Cast: Darshan Jariwala, Baharul Islam and the entire supporting cast nailed their characters. From adapting the character’s personality to adding their flair to the film, they balanced out everything. Each actor played their part with such ease and authenticity and made the entire film engaging despite the stretched plot and scenes.

Verdict: It’s A Must Watch For Crime-Thriller Fans

Let’s start with the negatives. Initially, the film caught a good flow and maintained the depth and thrill needed in a crime drama. However, later the the story felt a bit stretched at times which made me wait for the interval to catch my breath. The characters seemed a bit frivolous which led to a lot of weird expressions on my face, however, it was balanced out fairly. Also, I’m a bit disappointed with the ending. There’s no closure at all and I’m left with so many questions. The ending could have been more powerful, but it doesn’t live up to the mark. Moving on to the positives, the film’s cinematography was top-notch and as wicked as it sounds, they aesthetically shot the blood scenes. Kudos to the cinematographers, the brutal blood shots were mind-blowing and brought the much-needed raw intensity to the film.

Also, the way the shots were framed and the dark lighting was used, it added so much depth to the story and created a chilling demeanour. Furthermore, the screenplay was engaging and kept me on the edge of my seat, with my eyes closed. Honestly, as someone who’s not a fan of gore and violence, the scenes in this film traumatised me. Moreover, we have to mention the actor’s excellent performances; they were outstanding. Despite the story being stretched, it was worth watching! So, it’s a must-watch for fans who like crime dramas, gore and violence. However, if you cannot stand killing and murder scenes, you might need to gear up!
