Ghudchadi Review: Parth Samthaan, Khushalii Kumar Film Rides On The Back Of A Touching Narrative, Tight Screenplay
hauterrfly Rating: 3 / 5

As family entertainers have certainly lost their way into the world of Bollywood, Ghudchadi brought a slight hope with this family entertainer and double love story. Directed by Binoy Gandhi, the film features Parth Samthaan, Khushalii Kumar, Sanjay Dutt and Raveena Tandon playing the lead roles. Honestly, I went to watch the film without any thoughts or knowledge about the cast and was surprised by some actor’s average acting and lame dialogue delivery. However, Ghudchadi does bring a fresh concept to the table, which is always appreciated, as I’m always in for some new stories rather than the same Ghisa Pita plots. So, without giving everything away, here’s a detailed review of the “rectangular” love story.

The Plot Of Ghudchadi

Ghudchadi revolves around two love stories between old sweethearts who couldn’t have a happy ending and another young couple trying to achieve a happy ending. The story follows Chirag, played by Parth Samthaan, and Devika, portrayed by Khushali Kumar. These young couples embark on the journey of their future lives and discuss marriage with their families. However, the story takes a massive turn when Chirag’s father, Sanjay Dutt, aka Col. Veer Sharma, reignites a romance with the enchanting Menka, portrayed by the ever-graceful Raveena Tandon. It’s a typical Indian household love story when one member isn’t fond of another’s love interest and can go to any level to stop them. Here, the character is portrayed by Aruna Irani, who is Sanjay Dutt’s mother and Parth Samthaan’s beloved dadiji. Her mental state lies in the 80s, and all she believes in is religion and casteism. Well, the twists don’t end here; in a surprising twist of fate, it is revealed that Menka is none other than Devika’s mother. Imagine dreaming about you and your boyfriend getting married; however, it turns out he’ll be your brother. This twist sets the stage for a series of loud complications and too many misunderstandings. It becomes a roller coaster ride as both couples try their best to not break each other’s hearts. Sacrifices are made, and sour relationships between the mother-daughter and father-son occur. Will the lovers get a happy ending? Is Chirag’s dadiji going to approve of their relationship? Well, to find out the outcome, you need to watch the film, as I don’t plan to give the entire story away.

Performances

Parth Samthaan As Chirag Sharma: Parth Samthaan made his Bollywood debut with this romantic story and boy! he did a good job as the typical charming Bollywood hero. He brought the charm and charisma to the screen like a boss! His acting and expressions were on point and gave us all the feels and left us wanting more. Honestly, his on-screen presence was like a breath of fresh air in a room full of average performances. Thanks Parth! Needless to say,  his million-dollar smile and dialogue delivery made the other’s acting bearable. As a matter of fact, he did justice to his character and truly shone brightly in this film.

Khushalii Kumar As Devika: Khushalii Kumar played the role of Devika, who’s sassy and a total lover girl. Khushalii has an impressive learning graph since her debut and her growth is clearly visible. That being said there is more room for growth and exploration considering her potential.

Sanjay Dutt As Veer Sharma: I don’t know if he was told to act the way he did or if it was intentional, I found it cringe. His performance was average and nothing extraordinary. I mean, he wasn’t able to fit into his character properly. And don’t even get me started on the lack of chemistry between him and Raveena Tandon. Their on-screen connection was super dry and was saved by the lovely soundtracks. There was no spark between him and Raveena or with his son, Parth and it was oddly difficult to watch it.

Raveena Tandon As Menka: Raveena’s portrayal of the modern and bold woman was nicely done and when it came to delivering various emotions, she nailed it! Raveena Tandon brought the feels into the film with her talent and great body language. Her on-screen presence was commendable.

Aruna Irani As Kalyani Devi: Well, she nailed her role as the typical, snobby dadi ji. She portrayed her character so well that it makes you question whether she behaves the same in reality. Her rude remarks about the “ideal standards” of a bahu were delivered so well. Moreover, we also loved her character growth in the film. From her rude and snobby behaviour to her sweet portrayal of motherhood, she was a delight to watch.

Verdict: Performances Fell Short In This Fresh Take On Love Stories

My ultimate verdict of the film is pretty much a mixture of both good and bad. Ghudchadi features a mix of sudden jump cuts, which can be disorienting for the audience. Some lame jokes only manage to get a chuckle here and there. The scenarios presented in the film are somewhat funny, but not consistent which left the humour feeling a bit forced at times. One of the redeeming qualities of Ghudchadi is its music. The soundtrack of the film is well done and adds depth and much-needed emotion to various scenes. Needless to say, the use of background music in the film is indeed a standout feature that contributes positively to the film’s appeal. However, the use of vibrant colours in the film was appealing to the eyes, so kudos to the film’s cinematographers!

Having said that the storyline explores a unique theme and presents a different perspective. It can be refreshing for audiences who are tired of cliché plots. Furthermore, it’s nice that the makers dared to think outside the box and plan to introduce viewers to new ideas and narratives and made a nice addition to the comedy genre. However, it may not be a flawless cinematic experience, but it does have its moments. While the sudden jump cuts and hit-or-miss jokes may be disliked by some viewers, the film’s good music and innovative concept offer something of value. So, if you’re looking for a rom-com with a twist, Ghudchadi might just be worth a watch for its attempt at bringing something new to the table.
