Baby John Review: Varun Dhawan, Wamiqa Gabbi, Keerthy Suresh Starrer Is Yet Another Action Film With Ornamental Female Characters!
hauterrfly Rating: 2 / 5

After watching the trailer for Baby John starrer Varun Dhawan, Keerthy Suresh, Wamiqa Gabbi, Jackie Shroff, and more, I couldn’t help but raise my expectations. The action, the drama, and the star cast all looked so promising that I was really excited to see the film. I thought it would be a thrilling ride filled with entertainment since its a mass entertainer with south swag and mind-blowing action sequences. But was it really worth the hype? Here’s what I think about the Kalees directorial and whether it lived up to my hopes!

Plot Of Baby John

DCP Satya Verma finds himself in a dangerous situation when he confronts Babbar Sher, a powerful and corrupt politician. The trouble starts when Satya kills Babbar Sher’s son after he commits a serious crime. It leads to Babbar Sher seeking revenge, and he goes after Satya’s family. In the chaos, Satya’s family suffers greatly, and only his daughter Khushi survives the attack. To protect Khushi and escape Babbar Sher’s wrath, Satya fakes his own death. They move to Kerala, where they start a new life under the name Baby John.

For a while, they manage to live peacefully, enjoying their time away from the violence. However, their peace is short-lived as Babbar Sher eventually discovers that Satya is still alive, and this news threatens to destroy their quiet life. Realising that Babbar Sher will stop at nothing to get to him and harm Khushi, Satya knows he must take action. He decides to confront Babbar Sher and seek revenge for everything that has happened to his family. With a fierce determination to protect his daughter, Satya prepares to face the powerful politician once again. The story moves forward as Satya fights to reclaim his life and ensure Khushi’s safety.

Performances

Varun Dhawan gives it his all and tries to channel that south hero swag with slow-motion close-ups, but it just doesn’t work out. His dialogue delivery feels off, and while he tries to add his own flavour, it doesn’t quite fit the massy hero vibe. Keerthy Suresh is more of a pretty face than a strong character in this film. Her awkward dance moves are still stuck in my mind. On the other hand, Wamiqa Gabbi shines, even with limited screen time; she’s a breath of fresh air. Jackie Shroff brings a strong presence and looks great. Loved his aura onscreen; however, there were some ifs and buts!

Action

Well, if you were expecting some serious and mind-blowing action sequences, then you’ll be disappointed. The action is pretty average, and nothing that stands out or surprises you. The direction felt weak, and the film seemed all over the place. Massy? No, it was messy.

Screenplay

The story starts off slow in the first half and only picks up after the interval. The screenplay could have been much stronger, especially with the human trafficking angle, which falls flat.

Dialogues

One of the biggest letdowns is the cringe-worthy dialogue. Instead of powerful lines that give you goosebumps, we get a bunch of forgettable phrases that fall flat. It feels like the writers tried too hard to create memorable moments, but all we got were awkward exchanges that made us cringe instead of cheer. There’s nothing in the film that sticks with you or makes you feel anything deep. Honestly, it was really hard to take any of the serious moments seriously.

The Only Two Moments I Cheered!

In this film, there were only two moments that made me whistle and cheer. First, Rajpal Yadav’s action sequence was a total surprise—he brought some much-needed energy to the film! Plus, there was one memorable dialogue that actually made me sit up and, oh my! I screamed like a fangirl! And then, of course, Salman Khan’s entry was nothing short of amazing! Watching him share the screen with Varun Dhawan was a treat; he’s truly an icon.

Verdict: Mass Entertainer With Mere Entertainment

If I had to summarise, it felt like just another movie with the same old plot, where the female characters are more like decorations than real players in the story. I had really high hopes for Varun Dhawan, but honestly, I walked away feeling let down. The action scenes were pretty average, and nothing really took me by surprise. Jackie Shroff, on the other hand, was fantastic! His performance stood out, but I couldn’t help but wish we had seen more of him. The writers definitely could have done a better job developing his character. As for the songs, unfortunately, the songs didn’t really impress me, with only one standing out as decent and powerful. The cinematography had its moments, with some cool shots that caught my eye. Varun Dhawan had one comedy scene that really made me laugh, but overall, the movie fell flat on entertainment. However, during serious moments, the background music does its best to create intensity, but the acting just doesn’t deliver or stand by it! Anyways, it didn’t deliver the entertainment and South swag I was hoping for and has left me disappointed instead of the thrill I craved.
