Period dramas have a unique charm. From their beautiful costumes to their stunning sets, they transport us to a different time! Similarly, I was particularly excited to watch Ajay Devgn’s period drama, especially after seeing Rasha Thadani’s excellent dance performance on ‘Uyi Amma’ go viral on the internet. I was eager to see her onscreen. While the trailer of the film didn’t reveal much about the plot, it piqued my interest enough to make me look forward to the film. Directed by Abhishek Kapoor, Azaad is the debut film of Rasha Thadani and Aaman Devgan, and here’s what I think about the film!

Plot

Azaad takes us back to India in the 1920s, a time of emotional and physical struggle. During the 1920s,  India was under British rule and was fighting for freedom, and life was tough for many people. So, the story revolves around the pre-independence struggle and hierarchy. In the midst of this, there is a young boy named Govind who works at a stable. He falls in love with a wild horse named Azaad, who is the most loyal and charming.

Well, Azaad belongs to one and only Baaghi Vikram Singh, and he is totally loyal to his Sardar.
With a dream to ride the horse, Govind faces many challenges as he tries to tame Azaad. Will he be able to? Don’t worry, no spoilers mentioned! However, his journey with Azaad isn’t just about horses. It opens his eyes to the fight for India’s freedom. He sees how the British mistreat the people, the cruel nature of the Zamindari system, and how important it is to stand up for what’s right. He also notices the hierarchy and fights back. Well, the hierarchy also becomes a hurdle between him and a girl from the royal family.

Good Parts

Performances: Rasha Thadani and Aaman Devgan, the debutants, did a good job, but sometimes their way of dialogue delivery felt a bit unnatural. However, they have good chemistry together. Ajay Devgn, as always, had a strong screen presence in the film. On the other hand, Mohit Malik, who plays the bad guy, was extremely good. He thoroughly nailed the role of an egoistic person, and I couldn’t keep my eyes off him! Well, Diana Penty wasn’t utilised much, but her presence was graceful and strong. Also, how can I not mention the main character—the horse (Azaad)? He brought a smile to my face. His scenes were too good to watch. It had all the elements you need in a film. From funny parts to emotional, Azaad was a gem. Kudos to the director because the fact he made a horse act and in a way that’s so memorable is exceptional.

Human-Animal Connection

Even though the film has few exciting fight scenes, what truly stands out is how beautifully it shows the deep connection between Govind, Vikram Singh and his horse, Azaad. You rarely see such a strong bond between a human and an animal portrayed on screen in this way. It’s incredible how you can almost feel the horse’s emotions, from its fierce loyalty to its gentle nature. The scenes where Ajay, Aaman and Azaad are together are truly touching and will make your heart warm! Additionally, the direction of the film is commendable, particularly in how they utilised Ajay Devgn. Loved the songs too; it totally enhanced the scenes!

What Could Have Been Better?

While the film presents an intriguing concept, the storyline could have been more tight. At times, the screenplay felt a bit uneven, with some plot points feeling underdeveloped or rushed. A more focused and complex narrative could have further enhanced the overall impact of the film. The special effects are decent; however, it felt a bit unnatural at times. While there are some good moments, the jokes could have been funnier. The lead actors’ dialogue delivery could have been more impactful since this is a period drama and we crave powerful lines. Sadly, we missed on it.

Verdict:  This Period Drama Is A Good Watch

Ajay Devgn’s commanding screen presence alone makes it a nice experience. While Diana Penty’s role could have been more substantial, she exudes grace and strength whenever she appears. However, the real standouts are the debutants, Aaman and Rasha. They showcase genuine talent and leave a lasting impression. The performances across the board are commendable, and the action sequences are good. But the last scene led me to whistle and how! It would have been more exciting if we had a few more scenes like it. Talking about punch lines, there aren’t any as it was too off and vague. As mentioned above, the timing for dialogues was way off and couldn’t leave a mark.  Mohit Malik is a scene stealer as the antagonist and delivered a powerful and captivating performance. We want to see more of him! The direction is good, as Abhishek Kapoor knew how to put his characters into place and how to bring the best out of them. Furthermore, the background score and songs beautifully enhance the film’s emotional impact. So, you can give it a try as it is a one-time watch for it’s good storytelling and emotional layers.
