A Quiet Place: Day One Review: This Prequel Warms Your Heart Instead Of Giving You Chills; It’s The Best Cat Movie!
The prequel of the much loved thriller series hit the theatres on June 28, but is it worth watching?

As someone who loved the first part of A Quiet Place directed by John Krasinski, I was a bit sceptical about the latest prequel. A Quiet Place: Day One takes us back to the world of mysterious creatures, silence and survival, where every sound could mean the difference between life and death. It features Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o and Stranger Things fame Joseph Quinn and a cat in the lead roles. Yes, you read that right! This prequel is directed by Michael Sarnoski and is set to hit the theatres on June 28, 2024. However, after watching the prequel, my thoughts are all over the place but one thing is certain I surely missed the thrills that I was planning to witness. So, read on before you plan your weekend watch list!
The Plot Of A Quiet Place: Day One
The story of A Quite Place: Day One is written and directed by Michael Sarnoski. He is known to put his heart and soul into plot tropes, and he rightfully did that. The ever-bustling city of New York City is surrounded by these mysterious creatures or aliens. As they launch a deadly attack on the city, a group of survivors fight to survive and figure out how to stay safe. It’s all about how crucial it is to maintain absolute silence to evade the attention of these enigmatic and mysterious creatures.
However, the plot revolves around the three major lead roles played by Lupita, Joseph, and an adorable cat named Frodo. I know! It must be shocking to read that, but that’s how the movie goes. Sam, played by Lupita, is diagnosed with cancer, and her will to live in this world fades slowly. However, to fulfil her dream, Sam goes on a trip with her hospice centre residents to New York to visit the place filled with memories and to eat the pizza, which she couldn’t do due to her medical condition.
All in all, Sam’s struggles while battling terminal cancer often showed her pain and sadness in the way she communicates with others. Whether it was her sarcasm or the gut-wrenching poem she wrote about the hospice centre where she stays, it is visible how she was crumbling to survive. But for Sam, it was all about finding little moments of joy and cherishing them. In her journey of finding hope and survival, she meets another survivor who struggles for the same, Eric.
Joseph Quinn portrays the character of Eric, who came to New York for law school. While Sam is on the verge of giving up, Eric joins her and builds a ray of hope for her and himself. The duo Frodo fight to survive the attack by the deadly monstrous creatures. The human emotions run high as they struggle to communicate without making a sound, adding a layer of tension and depth to the storyline. The subtle humour sprinkled throughout the movie offers moments of light amidst the darkness and gives the audience a breather before plunging back into the suspense.
Performances
Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o gives a solid performance portraying the character of Sam, who’s diagnosed with cancer. The way she expresses her emotions in the movie is unbelievable! You could feel her pain and suffering throughout the movie. It almost makes your eyes bawl out with her stellar performance. But it was really Joseph Quinn who surprised me. If anyone thinks the guy can’t act, they need to watch this film RN because they couldn’t be more wrong! He delivered an excellent performance, drawing us into the world of survival and sacrifice.
The moment the duo started screaming, made me want to scream my lungs out and you’ll feel the same too. This was one of the major highlights of the movie as it showed their pain, which was suppressed due to keeping silent. Furthermore, the chemistry between the two is very cute and depicts raw emotions. Their companion, Frodo brings some softness to the film with the undeniable cuteness. Also, I wanna know who made this cat act because the best actor award goes to…

Verdict: Another Day, Another Dull Horror Film
A Quiet Place: Day One offers a mix of human emotions, subtle humour, and cute animal interactions that tug at your heartstrings. While the jump scares are evident and the film keeps you engaged, the lack of true horror and a deeper exploration of the creatures has left me disappointed and wanting more. The focus on the creatures is very low and not worth remembering, unlike the first part, which scared the hell out of me. All the characters are about surviving against all odds, but it feels like they keep repeating the same thing over and over again.
I expected more action-packed scenes because that’s what the movie is supposed to be all about. Emotional attachments are important, but what about the chills and thrills you want to witness in a “thriller” movie? It leaves a gap in the overall terror factor. Well, despite its shortcomings, the makers did a great job of creating a tense atmosphere and showcasing the strength of human connections in the face of adversity. So, if you’re in the mood for a suspenseful ride with a plate full of sweetness, this movie might just hit the spot! However, if you want to experience a fear- and creature-based story, I’d recommend you skip this one.
