By  |

Who said you need an expensive gym membership to get into shape? If you are still trying to get into a fitness routine, a few handy pieces of equipment, and a whole lot of motivation are all you really need. That said, I am here to help you pick the right equipment for a full-body workout at home. And just because I’m a DIY junkie, I’m also going to reveal some of my own secret hacks that will save you a ton of money in the process. Ready?

Here are a few must-haves to help you kickstart your fitness routine at home.

One of the best investments you can make is a good set of dumbbells. They enable you do indulge is a wide variety of exercises as well as cardio routines, and they barely take up any space in your room. Start off with a 3 or 5-pound weight, and then eventually, as your strength improves, work your way up to a 8 or 10-pound weight.

Hack: If you are a DIY junkie like me, you can even fill up empty water bottles with sand and weigh them on a weighing scale to get the exact measurement you need.

Workout DVDs

The smell of sweat each morning is one of the biggest factors that deters me from stepping into a gym. A workout DVD or a subscription to an online workout class is my holy grail when it comes to working out at home. Plus, it allows you to choose the workout you want, and switch it up to something else whenever you please. Zumba, aerobics, kickboxing – the choice is yours!

Hack: Follow fitness bloggers and models who actively create workout videos. You will find most of their workouts on Youtube or their personal blogs for FREE.

A stepper is great for cardio activities like aerobics, and it can also be used as a weight bench. You can increase or decrease the intensity of your workout by adjusting the incline and decline, and in turn give a new dimension to your workout.

Hack: Utilise the staircase in your building, try running up 10 floors of your building twice, and trust me your heart rate will go through the ceiling. It is the best form of cardio! You can use the stairs for side squats or lunges as well.

An Exercise Mat

An exercise mat provides you with a cushion on a hard floor and gives you support during floor exercises, ab workouts, and warmup stretches. There are several kinds of mats like the no-slip yoga mat, which is used for yoga or stretching, and a thicker cushion mat, which is used for floor exercises. And let’s not forget the variety of designs and colours.

Hack: Layer a few pieces of towel in order to achieve the cushioning you require for floor workouts. If you are crafty, you can even sew them on all the sides with a foam sheet in between. A towel is great to absorb all the sweat as well.

Foam roller

A foam roller is a great tool to stretch your body. There are several ways to stretch your arms, legs, back and every muscle possible in your body with a foam roller!

Hack: Roll up your yoga mat to create your own roller, and have fun rolling!

Ankle Weights

Ankle weights are used to add more body weight, which helps improve the muscles of the lower body with moves like leg extensions or standing leg lifts. They are great add-ons for lunges or any other exercise that requires ankle weights. Make sure that the weight of the ankle weight is not more than 10 pounds.
