Wimbledon Honour Roll To Write Names Of Female Players Without Marital Status

A woman’s marital status becomes everyone’s concern in society. Does she still go by ‘miss’ or is she someone’s ‘Mrs’ is something that people think they are entitled to know. But that, of course, is not applicable to a man. Society minds its own business when it comes to a man and often cares least about whether he is single or married or shall we say, in an ‘it is a complicated’ relationship. I don’t know when the society will modernise but the All England Lawn Tennis Club has certainly taken a step towards it as they have decided that from here on, they will not mention the titles against a female player’s name.

All England Lawn Tennis Club’s New Decision

As per reports, the club has decided to bring about a change in the Wimbledon’s honour roll and will remove the titles written as prefixes against the female players’ names. This change comes as a part of the ‘push’ to modernise the tournament. The tournament began in 1877 and ever since, the names of the female and male players are being written differently on the honour roll. The male players’ names are written with just their first and last name whereas the female players’ names were written with either the title of ‘miss’ or ‘Mrs’.

This also applies to married female tennis players who will not be identified by their initials or even their husband’s surnames.

The unveiling of Ash Barty’s name on the honour roll also received criticism as it mentioned ‘Miss A Barty’. Earlier, it was also noticed that umpires called the female players with their marital titles but only called out the surnames of the male players. This new decision is a hugely welcome change in the tournament, honestly!
