Your Menstrual Cycle Can Affect Your Cholesterol Test Result. Know All About It!

Alright, ladies, let’s talk about periods and cholesterol. I know, I know, it’s not the most glamorous topic, but trust me, it’s important. Did you know that women’s cholesterol levels can vary throughout their menstrual cycle? And that getting your levels checked during specific phases can provide more accurate results. So today, when Ankita Srivastav, a certified health coach, posted a reel on Instagram about why menstruating women should get their cholesterol levels checked during their luteal phase we had to dig deep.

First off, let’s do a quick refresher on the menstrual cycle. It’s typically broken down into two phases: the follicular phase and the luteal phase. The follicular phase starts on the first day of your period and lasts until ovulation. During this time, estrogen levels are high and cholesterol levels tend to be lower.

Then, we have the luteal phase, which starts after ovulation and lasts until the first day of your next period. During this time, progesterone levels are high, and cholesterol levels tend to be higher as well. This is why it’s important to get your cholesterol levels checked during the luteal phase. So, why does this matter? Well, getting your cholesterol levels checked during the luteal phase can provide more accurate results. She also talked about how our lipid profile, when we test for it around ovulation, estrogen, the dominant hormone, seems to affect our HDL positively. LDL and triglycerides might temporarily appear to be low and normal because estrogen is high in and around this phase.

On the other hand, if you get your levels checked during the luteal phase when cholesterol levels tend to be higher, you’ll have a more accurate picture of your overall health. This can help you make lifestyle changes, like adjusting your diet or exercise routine, to lower your cholesterol levels and reduce your risk of heart disease. But here’s the thing, ladies: not all doctors are aware of this. Many doctors still recommend getting cholesterol levels checked at any time during the menstrual cycle, without taking into account the fluctuations that occur. That’s why it’s important to advocate for yourself and request that your levels be checked during your luteal phase.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “But getting your cholesterol checked is such a hassle, and I hate fasting!” I hear you, sister, but it’s worth it. Fasting for 9-12 hours before the blood test helps ensure that the results are as accurate as possible. And hey, think of it this way: it’s an excuse to treat yourself to a big, hearty breakfast once the test is over.

So ladies, if you’re menstruating, it’s crucial to get your cholesterol levels checked during your luteal phase. This can provide more accurate results and help you make informed decisions about your health. Don’t be afraid to speak up and advocate for yourself with your healthcare provider. And remember, taking care of your health is always worth the hassle. You got this!
