5 Ways To Take Care Of Your Jade Plant At Home

Jade plants in particular are known for their upright, treelike appearance and glossy green, spoon-shaped leaves. They are extremely low maintenance, too. This is the reason why the succulent is a popular houseplant. Jade plants can live for several decades when taken care of properly, so here are 5 tips you need to know to take care of your succulent!

1. Controlled Amount Of Sunlight

Jade plants need bright, indirect light. They can tolerate a few hours of direct sunlight, but prolonged direct sunlight can scorch their leaves. However, the plant does require light, so make sure to keep your plant in indirect sunlight for at least 6-7 hours.

2. A Pot With Drainage Holes

Jade plants do not like to sit in the water for a long time. If the plant’s roots stay in water for a prolonged period of time then it may start rotting. Therefore it is important to store the plant in a pot that has a good draining system to remove the excess water.

3. Occasional Pruning

Pruning jade plants can encourage  growth, maintain  shape, and remove dead or damaged parts of the plant.  The best time to prune your plant is in spring or early summer, when they are actively growing. Cut back drooping or leggy branches and remove any dead or damaged leaves or stems by making cuts just above a leaf node.

4. Using The Correct Soil Mix

The best soil for jade plants is a gritty, sandy mix that has good drainage. Regular soil tends to retain alot of moisture, so it may be ideal for growing the succulent. If you want to see your jade plant thrive and grow properly, it is very important to select a soil mix that drains evenly and thoroughly, with a loose grainy texture that won’t clump or become soggy.

5. Deep Feeding

Jade plants are typically not heavy feeders and should be fertilised with caution. You can typically feed your jade plant once a month during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, diluted fertiliser. A well balanced fertiliser of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium mixed equally in a 10-10-10 ratio is ideal for jade plants.
