10 Best Indian Travel Destinations That Are Perfect For A Summer Break

April has just shown its face but the temperatures are already breaking all sorts of records. I mean, 40 degrees in Mumbai! It feels like a prolonged April fool’s joke.

It’s not like you need a reason to travel, but this might be the push you need to leave the city and head out for a much-needed vacay — a beautiful, peaceful holiday. Places that are cool and will make you forget this terrible heat.

While there are a ton of international destinations that can quench your wanderlust, there are so many beautiful places right here in India. A visit to any of these places is just the pick-me-up you need — yes, we’re sure. No, it is not Goa or Kasol, but those are welcome too, right?

Check out this list and tick off another location from your bucket list. And let us know in the comments below what your fave spot is.

1. Pondicherry

The quaint French town down south is the ideal destination for those who want to run away from their fast-paced lives and slow down for a bit.

The tiny town is filled with book cafes, delicious food and, of course, beaches. Here‘s where you can find out more about what to do, where to stay, and make sure you have a gala time.

2. Sikkim

My friend recently came back from the North East and termed Sikkim ‘heaven on Earth’ — when someone says that, you know you have to visit. A relatively unexplored region, it is still untouched by commercialisation and is a retreat for every nature and adventure lover.

Waterfalls, majestic mountains, deep valleys, and the most dreamy sunsets, you’ll never want to leave Sikkim. The Tsogmo Lake, a high altitude lake with the towering Himalayas as the backdrop, is a must-visit in Sikkim.

3. Dharamshala

Tiny, narrow lanes surrounded by hills as the Buddhist bells chime in the background, evenings at Dharamshala are the best way to live life.

Hog on yummy momos cooked by local vendors selling them on their cycles, or go on a nature trail and eat some hot maggi while staring out at the view. Welcome spirituality and rejuvenate completely amidst the mountains.

Also, when in Dharamshala, please make a quick stop at Mcleodganj and Khajjiar, which is India’s Switzerland.

4. Spiti Valley

Another famous location in Himachal, especially popular with backpackers, Spiti is the land of scenic views and shooting stars.

Go there just to camp and stay awake all night to watch the sky put up a performance for you. I cannot even explain the magic that occurs at this valley — it’s truly a marvel created by the almighty.

5. Lakshadweep Islands

This cluster of islands is perfect for those who love the beaches more than the mountains. Laze around on the sand or take a scuba-diving lesson, there is something for everyone here.

Head to the Kadmat island to experience the best of water sports and luxury hotels that will take your holiday a notch higher.

6. Tawang

Arunachal Pradesh hides this unpopulated gem well, and once you go there, you’ll know why. It will take you a couple of minutes to realise that what you are seeing is real, the surroundings are that magical. Lakes, hot water springs, and mountains, this one’s the ideal package for a road trip.

However, it is a restricted area, so you will need a pass to visit Tawang, which can be obtained from any of the major cities or through a travel agent.

7. Coonoor

Coonoor is an idyllic hill station in the south of India. Unlike others, it is not a difficult trek to reach, so is apt for a family holiday. Tea plantations, greenery all around, and weather that will make you take your cuppa and coop up inside a blanket. You can even go bird watching here.

Combine the trip with Coimbatore and Ooty to enjoy a complete Tamil Nadu experience.

8. Marari

If you refuse to go to Goa because of the crowd, Marari beach in Kerela should solve all your woes. Apart from the tasty Malayali food, the pristine beaches will take over your being.

Stay at the resorts right on the beach and bid your worries goodbye.

9. Rishikesh

This spiritual spot that is also known for its adventure activities, Rishikesh is ideal for a camping trip. Meditation and yoga camps are popular here, as Rishikesh is also known as the World Capital of Yoga.

And guess what? Vegetarian food here tastes better than any other cuisine, anywhere.

10. Auli

Even in summer, a part of Uttarakhand is painted with snow, while the other part showcases stunning floral beauty — enjoy the best of both worlds at Auli.

Perfect for those who love an adrenaline rush, Auli is not an easy, luxurious vacation spot, but if you fancy a tough trek, don’t think twice before booking your tickets.
