This Woman From London Spent More Than 1 Lakh Rupees On Bananas. That’s Bananas!

Due to the coronavirus and its lockdown, in the last year, a lot of things have changed for me. My dependence on social media has drastically increased, I’ve practically forgotten what a normal social interaction looks like and my idea of a successful Saturday night has gone from dancing the night away to binge-watching FRIENDS. However, another major change I have noticed is that everyone, from shops to rickshaw drivers, has started using some form or another of online payment. It is, after all, dangerous to deal in cash these days. However, even those online payment platforms aren’t one hundred per cent safe. No, I don’t mean you could get infected by the coronavirus through them but they are prone to technical glitches that could cause you to lose money unexpectedly. Take a look at this woman from London. She spent a little over a lakh while buying bananas. I would be laughing if I didn’t think this could happen to anyone!

A 28-year-old woman named Cymbre Barnes from London visited a branch of Marks&Spencer on her way to work to grab some food. She bought a bunch of £1 bunch bananas and proceeded to the self-checkout counter where she used ApplePay, which comes with no spending limit, to pay her bill. It was only after that Cymbre received a notification that informed her that she spent £1,602 (Rs 1,60,596) by mistake. Those are some very luxurious bananas. Although, just writing about this is giving me anxiety. This could happen to literally anyone. Well, not me since you need that much money in your account, to begin with. So I am safe from this particular glitch. *Sarcastically* Yay!

Speaking to The Telegraph, Cymbre said that she was in a rush to get to work and hence chose Apple Pay since it was contactless and instant. In hindsight though, it might’ve been a terrible mistake. She said that she did a double-take when she saw the screen but by then there was no going back since the receipt of her grand transaction was already being printed. As soon as Cymbre noticed the mistake she rushed to speak to an M&S staff member. However, she was told that the only register in the shop was broken and would not be fixed for several days. And hence, Cymbre had to walk 45 minutes to another branch to get a refund.

Speaking to The Telegraph a spokesman for M&S said that Cymbre’s incident was an isolated payment error, for which they have apologised to her and even offered her compensation. This was a lot of hassle for some bananas. We have to be super careful while using any online payment method. While Cymbre’s incident is bizarre and funny, let’s not forget that this can happen to anyone.
