Today is World Children’s Day and while this one usually passes us by without a blip, we are talking about it because a girl in Assam had the time of her life. You see, this 18-year-old student was given access to Assam Cheif Minister’s social media account for a few hours in honour of World Children’s Day. How cool is that?
Vandana Urang, a resident of Namroop tea estate in Dibrugarh district took control of CM Sarbananda Sonowal’s Twitter handle @CMOfficeAssam for two hours on 20th November. The teenager who is a first-year BA student with honours in political science managed the CM’s account from 9:00 am until 11:00 am.
Announcing this brilliant initiative, Sonowal tweeted on Thursday, “This World Children’s Day, student Vandana Urang is taking over our Twitter handle. Join us tomorrow, November 20 from 9 am to 11 am, and know how children are re-imagining the world.”

Urang took this opportunity to talk about an important cause- education and schooling of children. It’s a topic that is often overlooked, especially this year due to the pandemic. Urang said, in a video message that she shared from the CM’s account, that she hopes schools and colleges in Assam will focus on education so “no child gets left behind”. We love her spirit!
She said in her video message, “I thank the chief minister for giving me this opportunity. I will use it to speak about myself, other children and especially on the issue of education.” Further adding, “I feel the environment in schools plays an important role– good environment and innovative teaching methods, along with awareness on things like ill-effects of use of addictive substances will encourage children to continue and complete their education. Now that schools and colleges have reopened in Assam, I hope that we focus on these issues so that no child gets left behind.”
We really love this initiative taken by the Assam state government. It’s the perfect way to connect with the state’s youth at the same time talk about important issues like education. And Urang did a splendid job. She is also part of Muskan. A group of teenage girls that discuss topics ranging from gender equality, the importance of menstrual hygiene to opportunities that concern their future. Needless to say, we need more such initiatives and groups to be given a platform to raise awareness about these issues.
