Tesla Sued By Women Employees Alleging ‘Rampant’ Sexual Harassment At Workplace

I believe harassment in the workplace isn’t something unheard of. Not that I say it should be normalised but it is unfortunate that it happens so commonly that it has been normalised at this point. I recently covered a case of a female employee at Alibaba being fired for telling her story under the #metoo movement. Tesla is facing a similar backlash as they are being sued for sexual harassment against women.

We are all aware that women in fields of science and technology have to work harder than men. Women, in general, are underestimated and considered to be weaker than men but in such fields especially, which have been mainly dominated by men, they have to prove themselves to be taken seriously. The same is the case with Tesla Inc. Their factory in Fremont, California has had complaints by 6 current and former female employees who are throwing a lawsuit at the company for sexual harassment.

According to reports, each of the opening paras of the complaints filed in Alameda County Superior Court on Tuesday says, “Although Tesla publicly claims that it fosters a safe and respectful environment for its workers,’ the truth is that for years Tesla has subjected women working in its Fremont factory facilities to nightmarish conditions of rampant sexual harassment.”

The complaints against Tesla give detailed accounts of harassment by male colleagues and supervisors. It also talks about the lack of response from Tesla when the complaints were registered. Around 10,000 work at the plant in Fremont, California. The plant has been a subject of complaints about sexual harassment and racism at the workplace. However, none of these complaints has gone anywhere as Tesla makes employees sign contracts that mention closed-door arbitration for any disputes, which has been opposed by investors.

David Lowe, who represents Jessica Barraza, who filed a suit last month over “rampant” harassment at the Fremont facility said in a statement that Tesla has not been taken sexual harassment within the firm seriously.

It is a shame that a firm as big as Tesla has issues like that. Every company needs to have policies that protect its employees. Companies like Tesla exploit their employees and do not give them the necessary compensations and protection needed to make them feel comfortable in the workplace.
