Facebook Is Introducing New Emojis TODAY!

In a time where diversity and gender equality conversations are the order of the day, Facebook is — in its own small way — contributing positively to it. Starting today, Facebook Messenger is launching 1,500 new emojis. Yes, that means you and your friend in Sweden will get them at the same time!

“Emojis have changed the way we talk to each other and people love them!” wrote the company in a blog post. “In fact, nearly 10 per cent of mobile sends in Messenger include emojis.” And interestingly enough, the new emojis are going to be racially diverse and will cater to people from all walks of life, in what Facebook calls “gender-agnostic and multi-coloured options”.

“We’re diversifying the genders to create a more balanced mix that’s more representative of our world,” it explained in the post. So female professionals, swimmers, surfers, and lots more will join the bandwagon and make our chats a lot more interesting. Secondly, the emojis will also become standardised, meaning the image will show up as is on every device — so no more blank boxes on devices that do not support it.

What’s more, the new emojis are a step in the right direction of portraying women better. Finally, they’ve realised that we are more than just getting haircuts, applying nail polish, or tying the knot. You can now be a female police officer, jogger, or surfer, if you’re so inclined. Our favourite feminist icon Emma Watson will be proud, no doubt.

We can’t wait to start using them!
