Losing a loved one or a close family member is undeniably painful and hard. However, I cannot fathom the pain of parents who have to go through something as heartbreaking as losing a child. However, while pain and suffering are constants in everyone’s life, very few are able to understand how to deal with them and learn from them. In his book, ‘Hit Refresh’, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella talks about what it is like raising a son born with cerebral palsy and how it changed his perspective on life.
Satya Nadella detailed what it was like when Zain was born in 1996. He said that Zain being born suffering from asphyxia in utero opened his eyes. He learned that not everything can be solved in the manner that we like and it is best to make do with what we have. Satya also thanked the Seattle Children’s Hospital for taking care of Zain throughout his life.

Satya Nadella also recalled an incident from when Zain was in the ICU. He has just become the CEO of Microsoft. He said his perspective has altered as he looked at all the medical technology around him. He saw just how much worked on Microsoft. He saw how these medical equipments constantly relied on the cloud and how computational technology was an important aspect of medicine.
Satya Nadella talked about him dappling into religion, especially Buddhism. While he isn’t religious, he wanted to know more about Buddhism and Gautama Buddha. Buddhism taught Satya why humans suffer. He said that through suffering, humans can understand each other and have empathy.
