Ram Gopal Verma Gets Slammed After Posting A Sexist Tweet About Women Buying Alcohol. What’s With This Misogyny?

Here’s a news flash. No excuse in the world justifies a man for being a chauvinist pig. We here at Hauterfly have never condoned sexist behaviour by anyone and we aren’t about to start now. Look, it’s not about women being better than men or vice versa, we aren’t male bashers. It’s about equality and the fact that we have many people who think this way.

Have you ever noticed the double standards that our society has when it comes to men and women? Let me give you the most basic example- when a boy stays out till let’s say, 3 am, people say that he is living his life. But when a girl stays out, she is automatically perceived as wayward and out of control. Sound a little too familiar? It should, we have all been there. The thing is, we don’t live in the 19th century anymore and that means now, you can’t tell a woman what she can and can’t do.

However, no matter how much we talk about equality it just seems to fall on deaf ears. If people actually listened and actively participated in making the lives of women just a little easier, we wouldn’t have to battle sexism every single day. The reason I am so irked right now is that Ram Gopal Verma decided it was okay to be a sexist ass during this extended lockdown.

He took to Twitter on Monday and shared a picture of women lined up outside a liquor store waiting to buy alcohol. The caption read, “Look who is in line at the wine shops… So much for protecting women against drunk men”.

I am sorry but to me, it sounds like he just insinuated that it’s okay for drunk men to treat their wives like human garbage if the wives drink as well? Does this smell like victim shaming and character assassination to anyone else? I just can’t wrap my head around the fact that he just implied that women who drink don’t have the right to complain about domestic violence.

So, it’s just okay if your drunk husband punches you because you drink. Seriously, this is such utter fucking bullshit. Drinking and being violent are two completely different, completely unrelated things, but you wouldn’t expect RGV to know that.

There is no denying that this statement reeks of sexism and misogyny and it’s not just us who believe that. Singer Sona Mohapatra (who is known for the way she calls a spade a spade) also says that RGV was way over the line.

Sona replied to his tweet with a bang on reply. She said, “Dear Mr RGV, time for u to get into the line of people who desperately need a real education.1 that lets u understand why this tweet of yours reeks of sexism & misplaced morality. Women have a right to buy & consume alcohol just like men. No one has the right to be drunk & violent.”

We completely agree with her and we also think that RGV should spend this lockdown taking an online course on how not to be such a sexist pig.

After he posted that ridiculous tweet of his, it did not sit well with netizens. They called out his misogynistic overtones while slamming him.

One Twitter user wrote, “Mr Varma are you suggesting women who drink should not complain when they face any abuse from men? Sick disgusting logic that can only come from an insecure man.” While another one said, “Sir your misogyny is leaking”. Yet another one said, “Here goes the misogynist; so, if a woman drinks does that make her eligible for harassment.” There are like a hundred tweets by people playing the same tune and that makes me so happy.

You see the double standards in this, don’t you? Yesterday there were reports of men standing in lines outside the wine show for hours together and no one even batted an eye. And when you see a bunch of women standing in the same queue to buy alcohol suddenly the sky is falling.

This kind of petty sexism (or any kind of sexism) has been going on for too long and it needs to end. At this point, we have bigger problems to focus on and much to RGV’s surprise, women buying alcohol isn’t one of them.
