Rakesh Jhunjhunwala Says Stock Market Is Like Women, Commanding And Volatile. His Stock Just Fell in Our Eyes

Over the years several public figures and political leaders have demeaned women time and again. We’ve heard all kinds of things being said about women and their choices and whatnot. I’ve heard all kinds of BS on a woman’s clothing and behaviour and let’s not forget all the sexist jokes about women. And another man has gone and done it once again. This is honestly getting exhausting now. Stock market guru and investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala made a rather sexist statement about women while speaking at the 4th edition of the CII Real Estate Confluence 2022 on Thursday. The big bull compared the stock market to women.

The seasoned investor said, “Market is like a woman, always commanding, mysterious, uncertain and volatile. You can never really dominate a woman and likewise, you cannot dominate the market.” And you’d expect some to stop the man while he made the derogatory comment but shockingly the journalist, in this case, chose to laugh it off instead of calling out Rakesh Jhunjhunwala for the sexism. But another journalist, Rituparna Chatterjee chose to call out the stock marker guru on Twitter and we’re so glad she did it.

FYI, this is not the first time that Rakesh Jhunjhunwala has made a sexist comment about women. In 2013, during an interview with Economic Times, the big bull made a similar comparison of the stock market with women. He had said that the market is like women – ‘always commanding, mysterious, volatile and exciting’. And if you think that’s all, you couldn’t be more wrong. The stock market investor went on to add, “Just as you cannot have a good relationship with a woman by bullying her, you cannot have a good relationship with the market by trying to bully it or say that you are the king. Market is king.”

Not only is his behaviour shameful and derogatory but it also reeks of sexism. It’s shocking that a public figure has gone on to make such comments and stereotyped women time and again. And it would be so wrong to not call him out on this. So, Mr Jhunjhunwala, let me clear the air – it is not okay for you to repeatedly compare stock market with women and stereotype them.
