Yes, India might be still a developing country, yes we may have a declining economy right now and yes, the population of this country contributes to 17% of the total world population. Despite the fact that all these factors that might be the ones pulling us down, I still believe if turned around well and put to good use, the same elements can be used in strengthening our position on a global front, especially if the overflowing population of our country has access to good and sound education. An effort that a woman from Bhubaneswar is making for tribal children.
Living the adage that ‘a little kindness goes a long way’, Manshi Sathpati’s act of kindness has gone from the streets of Bhubaneswar right to the headlines, for her initiative to provide free education to the tribal kids around the place, is commendable.
Speaking about what she does and why does it, Manshi shares, “It is a slum area and their parents are daily wage labourers. The government runs many schemes for them but they don’t want to leave this place. I thought maybe if I teach them here itself they will develop interest in studies.”

Her desire to see the children progress in life, and become professionally sound and capable so they can upgrade their standard of living from a slum, Manshi’s efforts to contribute to the society have left us inspired. She also shares, “As of now, 40 students study. In one year’s time, they are studying English, Oriya, General Knowledge and Maths. They also have interest in singing, dance and drawing. I also conduct dance classes for them twice a week.”
Turning into a role model for the very kids she teaches, she says, “I inspire them and advice them to study so that they can become what they want.” In addition to this, she also talks about how she first tries to create a sense of interest within the children, by offering them something to eat, after which they convince them to study. “After COVID-19 pandemic, I teach them once in a week following social distancing and wearing masks,” Manshi added.
And that during the pandemic, there is a woman like her, not shying away from her responsibility and selflessly teaching tribal kids in Bhubaneswar for the betterment of their own future, is nothing short of fabulous. We clearly need more women like her, who are ready to enable our youth in the right way!
