People or even public figures asking for a ban on movies do not even surprise me anymore. But, yes, I do find the reasons behind asking for this ban really intriguing. The perspectives just amuse me and it makes me question their reasoning skills. Why do they not view a movie, the way it is supposed to be viewed? While this question remains unanswered, the Madhya Pradesh Education minister is now making headlines for doing the same. MP minister Vishvas Sarang has asked for a ban on the movie, Thank God because it hurts sentiments of the Hindu community by showing half-naked women around a deity, Chitragupt.

Thank God is a movie that features Ajay Devgan, Siddharth Malhotra, and Rakul Preet Singh in lead roles. Actor Ajay Devgan will be seen playing the role of a Hindu god, Chitragupt who is apparently believed to be a deity who decides a human being’s punishment and rewards based on their actions. According to the MP minister Vishvas Sarang, the fact that half-naked women have been shown standing around Ajay Devgan’s character Chitragupt is demeaning to the Hindu community. As per his tweet on this, he has also appealed to the Broadcasting and Information minister, Anurag Thakur to ban the film on these grounds. Vishvas Sarang also believes that Bollywood has always portrayed Hindu Gods in “objectionable ways”.

I guess India has a significant Hindu population but I don’t see the majority’s sentiments being hurt by the creative freedom in a film. How do the ministers speak on behalf of the many of us? Moreover, there is nothing triggering in women wearing skirts that will “hurt sentiments” in any way. Also, such statements coming from an education minister is a sheer disappointment. Where is our country even heading to?
