IUML Freezes Women’s Student Wing For Speaking Up About sexual Harassment

Whenever women stand up against the wrong that has been done to them, they are forced to shut up and just go with it. They are made to understand that their voice is going to be unheard no matter how much they scream. And this is especially the case with women students who belong to minority groups. Take the very example of the women students’ wing that was frozen by The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) when these women spoke about sexual harassment.

Recently, more than ten leaders from the women student’s wing, Haritha, – including the State President Secretary, Joint Secretary, and Treasurer – have complained against the Muslim Student’s Federation leaders on the grounds of sexual harassment and use of derogatory language. The allegations are against MSF State President PK Navas and Malappuram District General Secretary V Abdul Vahab. But The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) took no action on the complaint registered.

In fact, taking no actions against the complaint and then freezing the state committee of its women students’ wing, Haritha – The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) is facing quite the criticism. The Haritha wing is one of the most crucial wings of the Muslim Students’ Federation, which has always been vocal and open about its rights and ambitions. They recently have registered some serious complaints of sexual harassment against the MSF leaders. They even made the details of the allegations public on the 11th of August.

The conversations within the party have shifted their focus to patriarchy and reached a point where The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has frozen the women student’s wing, Haritha. And this decision was taken because the leaders of Haritha dared to raise their voice against sexual harassment and derogatory language that is used against women.

What took The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) by surprise was the fact that Haritha, the women students’ wing decided to go public with their complaint. According to the complaint, PK Navas and Abdul Vhab had spoken to the members of the Haritha in a vulgar manner when they met for the MSF’s state leadership meet. This is when things went out of control and Haritha filed a complaint on the grounds of sexual harassment and derogatory language used against women.

It was when Haritha, women students’ wing filled the sexual harassment complaint with the Women’s Commission that The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leaders started to find a common ground between the MSF and Haritha wing. So much so that after the intervention of the Women’s Commission even the police contacted the Haritha wings leader for the same.

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) wanted the sexual harassment complaint to the Women’s Commission to be withdrawn. They even gave a 24-hour ultimatum to the women students’ wing, Haritha, to withdraw the complaint. And only after the withdrawal of the sexual harassment complaint will The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) take any action. It was when Haritha leaders refused to budge, that The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) froze the wing.

The jury is still out on this one, but it is very clear to me that the Haritha wing – women students’ wing – is on the right side. No woman should tolerate any sort of sexual harassment and or be spoken to in derogatory language. I hope that this doesn’t go to the public poll because then The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) will have to face a more brutal form of criticism than they’re already facing.
