The kind of atrocities happening to women across the world is worrisome. Recently, the death of an Iranian woman at the hands of a morality police shook the world. The incident has been condemned by everyone and huge protests broke out in the country after the incident. Many Iranian women came out on the streets and started an anti-hijab protest. Post this incident, a human rights group in Iran also went ahead to reintroduce an app that will help women escape the morality police.

The Iranian morality police’s role is to implement the moral obligations on the citizens and to the extent that they have a say on their clothes too! The app was first introduced in 2016 by a human rights group based in San Francisco, United For Iran. The app that was named Gershad was made with the simple motive of allowing citizens, journalists, or activists a smooth escape from the morality police on their way. The app has the feature to locate the morality police and inform the users about it so they can change their paths. When the app was first introduced, the makers kept their identity a secret but as per the news, they no longer intend to do so. This app will mainly help women to avoid the police on days when they are not abiding by the strict Islamic dressing rules that they are bound to follow. This app became all the more significant after what happened with the Iranian woman, Mahasa Amini who was just 22 years old.

I do not know how helpful this app will be for women or even the efficiency of it. However, the motive behind the construction of the app is really commendable and thoughtful. I still have a question though, why is there morality police in the country?
