At a time when with every refresh of your newsfeed you find out more and more people testing positive, and almost every other message you read is an appeal to help someone look for a ventilator, or a plasma donor or cylinders of oxygen, happiness or even a little semblance of normalcy is hard to come by. With a looming fear of losing your loved ones, these grim times have all of us feeling low, and it is during times like these when one really needs something good in life to hold on to. Like this news of women boxers making history at the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships.
Giving us a reason to smile and feel proud even at a time like this, Indian women boxers of our country have proven their mettle yet again as they make a landmark achievement by bringing back seven gold medals!
Ending the championship on a successful note, all the participants from the Indian team registered glorious wins and brought back gold medals, filling us Indians, but most of all us women, with utter happiness and pride.

The women in action during this championship were Gitika (48kg) Naorem Babyrojisana Chanu (51kg), Poonam (57kg), Vinka (60kg), Arundhati Choudhary (69kg), T Sanamacha Chanu (75kg) and Alfiya Pathan (+81kg), all of whom emerged victorious. This championship was held in Kielce, Poland.

Back in 2017 during the previous edition of Youth World Championships that took place in Guwahati, Indian women managed to win 5 gold medals, and this time they surpassed even themselves and brought home seven golds. The sixth and seven gold medal that helped Indian women create history, were secured by Sanamacha and Alfiya respectively, as they out-performed their opponents and how.
Boxing Federation of India President, Ajay Singh spoke on the big achievement and said, “This has been an amazing effort from our youth boxers especially when the players had to be confined at home for most part of the last year and only make do with online training sessions. Our coaches and support staff did a stellar job despite the limitations and challenges. I congratulate all the winners on this unprecedented medal haul. This achievement is a testament of the talent we have in the upcoming generation of Indian boxing.”
In fact, earlier this week, young girls Noa and Kasha won gold medals at the World Powerlifting Congress India National Championships. At the meet this April held in Bangalore , both Noa and Kasha competed in the Pre-Teen Category with close to 30-35 other athletes, with about 50% of the pre-teen participants being girls.
