One of the most auspicious festivals in the Hindu calendar is getting near. Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Ganesh Utsav, is a festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha. Lord Ganesha is known for his wisdom, prosperity and good fortune. Date And Timings For Ganesh Chaturthi 2025
According to the Hindu calendar, the Drik Panchang, Ganesh Chaturthi occurs during the Shukla Paksha of the Bhadrapada month, the day Lord Ganesha is believed to have been born. This day falls on either August or September every year, according to the Gregorian calendar. This year, the festival will be celebrated on August 27, 2025. The Chaturthi Tithi starts on August 26 at 1:54 PM and ends on August 27 at 3:44 PM.
History Of The Festival
According to Hindu Mythology, Lord Ganesha is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It is believed that Goddess Parvati created her from dirt on her body and brought him to life to guard Parvati while she takes a bath.
When lord Shiva returned and saw Ganesha at the door, in a fit of rage, he cut off Ganesha’s head. When a heartbroken Parvati pleaded for Ganesha to be revived, Shiva substituted his head with that of an elephant.
Significance
The festival first began to be celebrated in the Maratha Empire in the 17th century. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj celebrated Ganesh Chaturthi to promote nationalism and unity among his subjects. It also gained popularity during the British rule when revered freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak used it as an attempt to unite people together to strengthen the independence movement.

Since then, Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with grand arrangements and immense devotion in many parts of India, like Maharashtra, Delhi, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana and even around the world. The 10-day festival begins with families installing Lord Ganesha’s idol at their homes and adorning the idol with beautiful flowers and other decorations. Traditionally, the Ganesh idol is then immersed in water on the tenth day with a grand procession.
