Elvera Britto, Former India Women’s Hockey Captain, Dies At The Age Of 81. Hockey India Mourns Her Demise

I always find it difficult to write about someone’s death. It’s so hard to believe that the person who lived a remarkable life and inspired so many people is no more. And today, we got a piece of sad news for the sports fraternity with the demise of legendary hockey player Elvera Britto. The former India women’s hockey captain died at the age of 81. We lost a gem!

On Tuesday, Elvera Britto passed away at the age of 81 in Bengaluru. She was the oldest of the three renowned Britto sisters, the three sisters played for Karnataka in the early 1960s. Elvera Britto is the recipient of the Arjuna award. Gyanendro Ningombam – President of Hockey India mourned her sudden demise and remembered her achievements. He said, “It is saddening to learn about the passing away of Elvera Britto.” He mentioned that Britto was ahead of her time and achieved so much in women’s hockey. He added that she continued to serve the sport as an administrator with the State and expressed his deepest condolences to her family on behalf of Hockey India and the entire hockey fraternity.

The official Twitter account of Hockey India shared a tweet mourning the death of the legendary hockey player. The tweet read, “Regret to inform that the passing of Elvera Britto, a former International Hockey Player and Arjuna Awardee recipient in 1965. May Her Soul Rest In Peace!”
