All of us have grown up reading bedtime fairytales that fueled our childhood dreams. Whether it’s wanting to be a real life princess or dressing up as one in every fancy dress competition ever… Cinderella and Ariel were literally our role models.
It’s only when we actually started to adult that we realised that the plot of these stories was a load of BS. Like, their only life goals were to be rescued by a Prince Charming, and get married. Or as in Sleeping Beauty’s case, get kissed in her sleep. I mean, the concept of consent was literally thrown out the window, and then buried six feet into the ground. But there seems to be hope for the future generation to write their own tales. Ones that respect, and celebrate women as brave, ambitious, and positively fierce!
One illustrator, Matt Burt decided to give these fairytale divas a makeover. A much-needed one at that! What if our beauties had careers? What if they had ambitions, dreams, and took up roles that were more than just being delicate, and pretty?
Disney princesses have been given careers by Burt, and they make so much sense. I could totally see the story becoming hell a lot interesting after looking at these designs. We need more of this, and less of sympathy-seeking, sad yet gorgeous princesses. I wonder if the idea was inspired by the real life princess — Meghan Markle.
